Charles "Mr. Charlie" Vincent Perniciaro, Sr.

Charles "Mr. Charlie" Vincent Perniciaro, Sr., of Arabi, LA, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 18, 2020, at the age of 92. He was born November 18, 1927, to the late Peter Perniciaro and the late Santa Canzoneri. He is preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, the late Leon Perniciaro, and the late Joseph Perniciaro, and by his wife of 64 years, the late Leah Herkes Perniciaro. He is survived by his two sons, Charles Perniciaro, Jr. and David Perniciaro; his daughter-in-law, Nicolle Perniciaro (Charles), and his two grandsons, Charles Perniciaro, III, and Nicolas Perniciaro. Mr. Charlie was a pleasant man who will be remembered for his cheerful spirit, caring heart, cap-wearing, cigar-toting, hard work ethic, and generosity. He had a keen memory of generations upon generations of the students who attended Carolyn Park Elementary School, in Arabi, where he was fondly known as "The Candy Man." He worked at Carolyn Park Elementary School for over 30 years, winning numerous awards, including Beautification awards for planting and maintaining his amazing gardens around the school grounds. He went above and beyond his custodial duties throughout his career, winning Custodian of the Year several times. He put 100 percent and more of his heart and hard work into every job he performed, which included working at the Slaughter House in Arabi, the Harbor Police Department in New Orleans, the Chiffon room, and the Tiffany Room in Chalmette, as well as Johnny Gallo's produce stand, the St. Bernard Parish School System, and his own grass cutting service, among many others. His favorite pastime was growing Creole Tomatoes to eat, enjoy, and give away to his many friends. His family would like to extend a special thanks to all those who helped make Mr. Charlie feel loved and appreciated, including Debbie Lawson, Roberta Steward, Pellegrini's, the St. Bernard Sheriff's Department, the team at Metropolitan Dialysis Center, in Chalmette, where he was dialyzed for the past three years, as well as to his many friends. A visitation was held for Mr. Charlie on Wednesday, June 24, 2020, at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home in Chalmette, LA, followed by a funeral service in his memory. He was laid to rest in St. Bernard Memorial Gardens. To sign and view the family guestbook, please visit www.stbernardmemorial.com.
