Frank Nelson Carver, Jr., passed away peacefully on September 20, 2020 at the age of 80 in Brandon, FL. He was the beloved husband of 56 years to Joan Morel Carver and devoted father of Mark Carver (Shelley), Robyn Carver, and Joni Carver Baudoin (Roland). He was preceded in death by his parents Frank Nelson Carver, Sr. and Margaret Schindler Carver, and his sister Jacqueline Carver Arceneaux (Dan). He is also survived by his sister Sandra Carver Groetsch (Chuck) and his brother Ronald Carver (Phyllis), and his grandchildren Justine Langkopp, Joshua Langkopp (Salena), Roland Joseph Baudoin, Jansen Smith, Hayden Baudoin, and Katherine Baudoin. He was born March 13, 1940 in New Orleans, LA. He grew up in the 9th Ward and played sports at Bunny Friend Playground. He was a long-time resident of Chalmette (St. Bernard Parish) who relocated to Lithia, FL, following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In 1954, he graduated from St. Mary of the Angels grammar school (where he was an altar server, skilled basketball player, and named Ideal Boy in 8th grade), graduated Holy Cross High School in 1958, attended the first-ever class at LSUNO, and graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge in 1964 with a degree in Industrial Technology and a commission in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant. After graduating LSU, he married Joan Morel at St. Vincent De Paul Church in 1964, and immediately following the ceremony, they drove to Fort Bliss (El Paso). Upon leaving active duty, he continued his military service in the Louisiana National Guard and eventually retired from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1992 as a Lieutenant Colonel while serving in the 377th TAACOM (New Orleans) as a Personnel Management Officer. He received numerous awards and decorations for his exemplary service and performance, including the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. He was also an expert marksman and member of the unit’s competitive shooting, pistol team. Nelson had a long, successful career working in Human Resources and Personnel. After returning to civilian life in 1966, he began working for American Standard (Gentilly). Thereafter, he worked for the Amax Nickel Refinery (Braithwaite), the National Tea Company (National Food Stores and Canal Villere grocers) and retired from Entergy Corporation (New Orleans) in 2003. His employment saw Joan and him relocate from Chalmette, LA, to Zachary, LA, then to Vicksburg and Jackson, MS, and finally back to Chalmette, LA; where they lived until 2005. Due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the resulting damage to their home in St. Bernard Parish, Nelson and Joan evacuated to Lithia, FL, where their youngest daughter Joni was already residing, and they remained in Lithia where Nelson resided until his death. As a resident of Lithia, Nelson was an active parishioner and supporter of St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church in Riverview, FL. For 10 years, he volunteered with Meals on Wheels delivering meals to homebound persons. In his early years, he loved fishing and spending time at the family camp in Little Woods on Lake Pontchartrain, especially with his father-in-law Ralph Morel. Nelson was also active in the St. Bernard Parish Recreation Department as a basketball referee and basketball coach. He was also active in Junior Achievement and also obtained his real estate license. Additionally, he was a natural mechanic and could fix anything. In his later years, he enjoyed the simpler things in life: talking on the phone with his brother Ronnie, his brothers-in-law Charlie Morel and Bobby Morel, his childhood friends and many others; taking trips back to New Orleans; talking about LSU football; scrolling through pictures of his family and friends on Facebook; and sitting outside in his favorite chair feeding the birds and squirrels enjoying the peacefulness of the day and being visited by his neighbors. More importantly, he actively supported his children and grandchildren. He attended dance recitals, Cub Scout events, little league games, school functions, and much more. If there was an event that involved his children or grandchildren, he was there. In fact, if anyone needed Nelson (friend, neighbor, relative, or stranger), he was there. On Monday, October 5, 2020, a visitation for relatives and friends will be held from 10 a.m. until 11:15 a.m. at Serenity Meadows Funeral Home, 6919 Providence Road, Riverview, FL 33578, followed by a Funeral Mass at 12 p.m. at St. Stephen Roman Catholic Church, 10118 Saint Stephen Circle, Riverview, FL 33569.
