Eloise “Mickey” George Skelly Bergkoetter, beloved wife of Virgil Bergkoetter and beloved widow of James E. Skelly, Jr. passed peacefully away on Friday, August 18, 2017 at 1 a.m. in Sycamore Village in Swansea, Illinois, at the age of 86. She was a resident of Okawville, Illinois, for the past eight years and formerly a resident of Chalmette, Louisiana. Born and raised in New Orleans, Mickey enjoyed the New Orleans culture, especially New Orleans Saints football games. A long-time employee of Dixie Mill Supply and Cahn Enterprises, Mickey was proficient in and enjoyed bookkeeping, as well as helping to manage and maintain French Quarter apartments during her working career. Mickey was the only child born to Andrew George and Christine Casella on October 19, 1930. She was married to James E. Skelly, Jr. for 53 years at the time of his passing on June 19, 2005. Together they raised three children, Susan Skelly Evans (Robert), Sandra Skelly Guidry (Clint) and Dr. Stephanie Skelly (Joe Toler). Grandmother to Douglas Evans, Alison Evans Burks, Christina Guidry, Isabelle Toler and Josie Toler and great grandmother to Bailey Burks and Brady Burks. Mickey is also survived by her stepson, James E. Skelly, III (Alice); several step grandchildren, step great grandchildren and step great-great grandchildren. Beloved aunt, niece and friend to many. During the last eight years in Okawville, Mickey with her husband Virgil together enjoyed dancing, raising their vegetable garden, some traveling and being with their friends. Mickey’s beautiful voice and love of singing was a blessing to many, and she routinely sang in church and at weddings. She had the privilege of singing for Saint John Paul II when he visited New Orleans in September of 1987. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass, officiated by Fr. Roch Naquin, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 4640 Canal St. in New Orleans on Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 1 p.m. Visitation at church will begin at 12 noon. Interment to follow in Metairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
