Durinda Poumaroux Capella passed away on Monday, May 21, 2018, at her home in Chalmette, LA at the age of 64. Durinda was born on August 17, 1953 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Irwin and Joycelyn Poumaroux. The elder of 2 children; brother John (Merry), they still enjoyed cutting up together on vacations and trips to the French Quarter. Known for her ease in frequent conversation, she possessed a contagious smile, a constant glow in her eye and an entertaining sense of humor. Throughout her life she maintained a sweet and simple demeanor that won the trust and hearts of many. Her signature gift of joy, shown through her constant smiling, laughter, and love for life, family, and friends will never be forgotten. After graduating from the Academy of the Holy Angels and realizing she was much smarter than the scholarship awarded to her by Nicholls State University, she accepted a position with the United States Government in which she retired after 30 years of service. Durinda married the love of her life, Frank “Chick” Capella on November 7, 1975. Married for 43 years, Durinda and Chick raised one son, Christian (Angela). Possessing a heart made out of gold, Durinda faithfully cared for family and friends through delicious cooking and the world’s greatest chocolate chip cookies. With a real zest for life, Durinda loved to spend time with her husband, son, daughter-in-law,, and her two grandchildren, Camryn and Abbey, who were her pride and joy. Durinda was a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish with many friends who love her dearly. She was also a longtime board member of Corinne Estates Civic Association where she served graciously. Durinda was a very special person who dedicated her life and love to her family, friends, and community. She was an extremely kind soul with a tremendous heart who was always willing to help those in need. Her sweet smile and loving warm good nature will be greatly missed by all. Survived by her loving husband, Frank “Chick” Capella, dearest son, Christian Capella (Angela), and her blessed grandchildren, Camryn and Abbey Capella, who made her the proudest grandmother. Durinda is also survived by her cherished parents, Irwin and Joycelyn Poumaroux and brother, John Poumaroux (Merry). Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends of the family attended the memorial visitation and mass at Our Lady Prompt Succor Catholic Church, 2320 Paris Rd., Chalmette, LA 70043 on Monday, May 28, 2018. Inurnment followed at St. Bernard Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested to make a donation in Durinda’s name to The Make-A-Wish Foundation.
