Mary Germaine Dufour Byers, known to many as Germaine, passed away peacefully on the morning of Thursday, October 11, 2018 at 9:02 a.m. at Chateau da Notre Dame Skilled Nursing Facility at the age of 78. A native of New Orleans and a longtime resident of Poydras, LA. Mary was the daughter of the late Curry and Edine Dufour. She was preceded in death by her grandson Philip Meyers, her twin sister Mary Lorraine Dufour, and her former husband Lynn Meyers, Sr. Mary is survived by her husband Robert, her children Gwendolyn, Lynn Jr. (Charlotte), Diane (Keith), and Cherri (Oliver). She was the proud grandmother of 9 grandchildren: Brandy (Jason), Derek, Philip, Curry, Nancy, Codi, Dalton, Brittany, and Robert. She is also survived and fondly remembered by her 10 great grandchildren, along with many cousins, relatives and dear friends. As a teenager, Mary worked at Woolworth’s on Canal Street. She also worked as a school crossing guard, and for most of her life enjoyed her profession as a seamstress. She found pleasure in the details of everyday life and caring deeply for others. She will always be remembered for her loyalty and dedication to her family, her caring and loving spirit, and spoiling the grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by her family and by all those whose lives she touched. Her family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to the staff at St. Bernard Ochsner Hospital, with special thanks to the ICU nursing staff and Nurse Melinda Onidts. Relatives and friends attended a visitation held at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue St., Chalmette, LA on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, followed by a Funeral mass in Mary’s memory. She was laid to rest at St. Bernard Memorial Gardens.
