Walter Evans, Jr., of Metairie, LA, died Friday, April 3, 2020, at Lake Villa House in Metairie, LA, after a prolonged illness at the age of 90. Walter was born on July 12, 1929, in Stockton, KS, to Walter and Hazel Evans. He had four older sisters, Kathleen, Thelma, Donna Lee and Laura. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1947. He attended the University of Wichita (now Wichita State University) both before and after his days in the Navy. He served in the US Navy from 1950 to 1954 and was stationed primarily in Pensacola, FL. where he discovered the wonders of Santa Rosa Island, which became his favorite vacation spot for decades. More importantly, while stationed in Pensacola, he traveled with a Navy buddy to help repair a barn belonging to that friend’s father in Ovett MS. There he met Olivia Landrum, they began dating, fell in love, and were then married on April 3, 1954, at the Good Hope Baptist Church outside Ovett. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage and Walter was at Olivia’s side until her death in 2010. They had one daughter, Janet Patrice, and two sons, Walter James and Kenneth Randall. Walter worked as an engineer for Boeing in Wichita, KS. from 1954 to 1963. He then worked for Chrysler at the NASA Michoud Facility in New Orleans from 1963 to 1969 helping to build the Saturn V Boosters for the Apollo Space Program. After that he worked as a maintenance engineer at the Tenneco Oil Refinery (later acquired by Mobil Oil) in Chalmette, LA, retiring from that position in 1993. He and Olivia were active in the Presbyterian Church their entire adult lives. Walter was a Sunday School teacher, Youth group supervisor, Deacon and Elder at Gentilly Presbyterian Church, and later volunteered at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church as an Usher, Property Committee member, and “Hard Hat” making repairs at the Church. He and Olivia travelled throughout each of 50 United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and the Holy Land where they visited Bethlehem, the Sea of Galilee and Jerusalem. Although they enjoyed all of their trips, the Holy Land Trip with their church group was the one that Walter and Olivia talked about with great passion as they were excited to see so many places that they had read about in the Bible their entire lives. Walter enjoyed doing genealogical research and wrote a book on his family, “Evans-Miner Family History” in 1997. This book traced his paternal family tree back to Richard and Hannah Evans, who brought their eleven children from Kerry Parish, Wales, to Wisconsin in 1845, finally settling in Galena, IL. He traced his maternal ancestry back to Thomas Minor who immigrated from Somerset County, England to Salem MA in 1629. Olivia then convinced him to research and write a book about her family. He completed the “Landrum-Boutwell Family History” in 2002 which traced Olivia’s paternal ancestry to John and Jane Landrum who immigrated from Scotland to Rappahannock County, VA in 1688; and, her maternal ancestry to Lioney and Mary Boutwell who were married in Onslow County, NC in 1752 and were probably second or third generation immigrants from England. His genealogical research included countless visits to libraries, churches, and cemeteries in America, Wales, England, and Scotland. The biggest thrill of his research was finding the 250 year old Evans ancestral home in Wales, where he and Olivia met the current owners who gave them a tour and had dinner together. The modest combination home and stable was a “moonlight house.” The law at that time provided that if a family who worked on a noble’s estate could erect a house beginning at dusk and have smoke coming out of the chimney by daylight, they were given possession of the home plus the ground as far as one could throw an ax. The house then was a pre-fab with numbers carved in the timbers, which were still visible. Walter loved telling family and friends about visiting the home where several generations of his ancestors lived, and especially where his grandfather grew up as a small boy. When Olivia died, Walt continued travelling, visiting family and friends and attending various family reunions where he was usually the genealogy expert. He also enjoyed ballroom dancing at the Jefferson Orleans where he met his second wife, Sylvia Williams. They were married October 1, 2016 at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church in New Orleans, LA. Walter’s grandson, Aiden, and Sylvia’s granddaughter, Lauren served as best man and bridesmaid, respectively. Walt and Sylvia enjoyed dancing and travelling until he became ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, his four sisters, his first wife, Olivia, and their daughter. He is survived by his second wife, Sylvia Evans of Metairie, LA; his eldest son, Dr. Walter James Evans and his spouse, Toni Cooke-Evans of Fork, SC; his youngest son, Kenneth Randall Evans, Esq. of New Orleans, LA; two grandchildren, Allison Olivia Evans of San Diego, CA and Aiden Sean Evans of Lexington, SC; two step-grandchildren, Avonlea Sarah Barnhill of Fork, SC, and Richard Carlyle Cooke, Jr. of Lexington, SC., numerous nieces and nephews, and Sylvia’s children Brian Ross and his wife Christina, Michelle Perret and her husband Jerry, Bobby Williams and his wife Regal, and granddaughter Lauren. All of them adored Walter because he was a kind, loving and honorable man who lived his Christian faith, and always treated everyone with respect. It was also frequently said of him that he never met a stranger. The Evans family expresses its gratitude to Phalon Cornist, NOLA Home Care, Passages Hospice, Lake Villa House, and Metro Med Pass who cared for him during the last 10 months of his life. Special Thanks are extended to Renee, Deanna, Stephanie, Nicole, Monica, Darleen, Monika, Chris, Sharon, and Dejuan. Memorials can be sent to the St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church in New Orleans, LA. A brief graveside service for immediate family only was held on Wednesday, April 8, 2020, in the Good Hope Cemetery, Highway 15 South, Ovett, MS. The Rev. Ricky Mitchell officiated. There was no visitation or public funeral service due to the coronavirus pandemic. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date at St. Charles Avenue Presbyterian Church. Timothy was a fixture in the national and local film industry. His first professional big break was on the miniseries, “Noble House,” where he consulted on costumes. He was producer for several shows on the History Channel. Well-known and respected in the film industry as a historical consultant as well as his expertise on American and European military costumes and protocol, he worked on such projects as The Last of the Mohicans, the popular series Mail Call, The Free State of Jones, and Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, as well as the recent reboot of the Roots TV series in which he helped stage battle scenes. A familiar face at his beloved St. Patrick’s Church Latin Mass, Timothy served as usher there for many years. He had an encyclopedic knowledge of history and could recite perfectly bits of dialogue from his favorite films. Timothy, very much the gentleman, had the kind of upbeat personality people liked to be around, always brightening a room not only with his presence but also with his knowledge of present and past events especially around historic and world events. His old-time natural charm, culture and eagerness to bring people together are irreplaceable. And his attachment to the English Catholic heritage he received, was one of his noblest traits. He loved New Orleans for it’s unique customs and deep history. He was a Knight Commander of the Star of Ethiopia and was awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Lion of Rwanda by the King of Rwanda, for services rendered. Edith Adelaide Nunez
Edith Adelaide Nunez passed away on Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at the age of 96. She was the cherished wife of the late Roger “Teta” Nunez. Loving mother of Lynn Nunez Gagnon (the late Lynn Paul Gagnon) and the late Kirk Lee Nunez (Georgie). Daughter of the late Joachim “2-2” Nunez Sr. and Odile Nunez. Sister of the late Joachim “4-4” Nunez Jr. (Dorothy Chapman). Proud grandmother of Todd Nunez (Cheri) and Cade Nunez (Chantel). Great grandmother of Kirk Nunez. Also survived and fondly remembered by her “other daughter” and my “other sister” Sonia Nunez Monk (Chris). Edith enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and taught us the importance of family bonds and simplicity. She treasured spending time with her beloved Reggio and Islenos friends and family. Her cooking skills were incredible; her favorite was cooking gumbo for all she loved. Some of her favorite times were spent watching & listening to birds, playing the piano, singing and playing hymns as well as other music and she couldn’t resist a good cup of coffee! She was married to her Prince Charming, “Teta,” and he made sure she knew she was his Princess. Many who knew her only knew her as the quiet Southern Belle who enjoyed “rocking” on her front porch; those who knew her more intimately will remember her for her tough, resilient, “spicy”, sassy, side!! Although Reggio was always her beloved home, the only home that could replace Reggio is where she is now! She is experiencing more than she could have ever dreamed or imagined! The scripture from 2 Corinthians 5:8 certainly applies. “We are confident, I say, & would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.” Excerpt from a devotional - Paul did not just say that “We will be at home.” He said, “......at home with the Lord”. What a heartwarming image knowing she is rejoicing with her loved ones, along with the Lord! 1 Thessalonians 4:13 And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope! (That belief and hope is our comfort as we grieve her loss). Special thanks to the entire staff at Forest Manor Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center. They loved my mother tremendously! Many thanks to my adopted sisters, Vana Jackson, Tracy Kondas, and her hairdresser, Diane Johnson. They faithfully helped me with my mom, visited her regularly and loved her dearly. My mother was a fan and supporter of Billy Graham so in lieu of flowers or cards, please consider sending donations to his son, Franklin Graham’s organization whom is presently helping with the COVID-19 Crisis, Samaritan’s Purse Emergency Medicine Fund. This would be most appropriate and timely. A memorial has been set up in her name at www.samaritanspurse.org/donation-items/emergency-medicine; or Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607; 828.262.1980. She will be laid to rest with a private graveside service to be held at St. Bernard Catholic Cemetery, St. Bernard, LA. George was born and raised in Bourg, on a houseboat with his brothers moved to Shell Beach (St. Bernard Parish) with the best childhood memories, moved back to Houma and met the love of his life. George was a man of great strength and integrity whose love spread far and wide. There was a sparkle in his eyes and a joy in his heart that shined in the light of God. We were blessed to have had him as our dad, brother, grandfather and friend. He was greatly loved and we are forever grateful that he belonged to us. His stories and his love of life and family will live on for generations to come...in each and every heart and mind his life touched! George loved to fish, hunt, trawl and build things. He loved the bayou life and he instilled that love in his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed multiple camps on Last Island with his immediate family and then built one for his own family. His brothers, sons and daughter and son-in-law all owned trawl boats and would trawl alongside one another year after year, competing on who could catch the most shrimp. It was always Jody! He would say, “You got to think like a shrimp, where would you hide?” The greatest of memories were made on the water, at the camp and on Last Island. Due to the recent health concerns and the restrictions in accordance with limited gatherings, the funeral services will be held privately by the immediate family. Interment: Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery. However, friends are encouraged to view and leave a memory for the family on our website www.chauvinfuneralhome.com. The family thanks everyone for their understanding during this difficult time.
