On the morning of Sunday, January 13, this world lost a truly remarkable woman, Katherine Wallace Mayne, at the age of 92. Katie, as she was known by her friends, or Miss Katie by the many young people and others she knew and served, or Maw-Katie by her (large) family, goes to join her beloved husband Colin Mayne, her husband of 72 years. She was the daughter of John Jacob Wallace and Katherina Schadt Wallace and sister to John, Jeff, Gene, George and Laura Wallace, who have gone before. She is survived by her loving brother Robert William “Bill” Wallace. Katie had four loving sons: John (Anne Galjour), Thomas (Karen Rodriguez), Michael (Debby Francioni), James (Charlotte Voelker), and 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, all of whom loved her dearly. In fact, each was her favorite. Miss Katie lived in Chalmette for many years, where she was a fan, coach, and “ride” to countless ballplayers of every description. She and Colin then moved to Waldheim, where their home became the center for family and friends far and wide. There, Katie was active in her Lutheran Church, the LWML, her quilting groups, bowling, delivering Meals on Wheels, and being an inspiration to a whole new generation of “kiddos.” If a life be measured in family, faith, friendships, tolerance, service, resiliency (more than one storm) and the joy she brought to others, Katie’s graph is off the charts! The visitation and funeral services were held at E.J. Fielding Funeral Home in Covington on Saturday, January 19, 2019. Burial followed at Garden District Cemetery on her beloved Highway 21. In lieu of flowers, give to the charity of your choice.
