Mark Henry Aschebrock

The world lost an incredible man Saturday, February 27, 2021. Mark Henry Aschebrock, born on June 11, 1971, left family and friends like he always wanted—short, quick and before being placed in a nursing home. At age 49, Mark passed as happy, headstrong, and kindhearted as family always knew him to be. Mark held many titles in his life, but father was his most exceptional. He was extremely proud of his son, Taz (Bri) and daughter, Storm (Connor) whom he raised with Mary Lewis, and was known to brag about them, even to complete strangers in a bar room. Whether coaching baseball games or watching dance recitals or cheering loud as his son graduated the Firefighter Academy and his baby girl received her white coat at LSU’s Veterinary School, his children always knew him to be there. He can rest peacefully knowing he provided for his children and supported them in accomplishing their dreams. Mark was always a hard-working man, constantly finding projects to complete. His latest project was redoing the house he resided in with his fiancé, Rhonda Servary, and her children Trestin, Keith and Jazlyn—for whom he assumed a fatherly role. He was ecstatic to expand his family this year with plans to get married in Las Vegas by a midget Elvis. His strong will and determination were credited to his father, Henry (Linda) and mother, Peggy Upright (Fred, deceased). Mark and his older sister, Wendy (Steve), always looked out for each other, and she served as a strong support system throughout his life. Mark held friends just as close as family. He and his cousin, Keith, were inseparable from a young age. They bonded through sports, home projects, sword and movie collecting, and breaking all the rules. Mark experienced life outside of Louisiana for the first time last year as he travelled across the country with two close friends, Tony (Kim) and Adam (Logan). Even while away from home, he enjoyed being Uncle Mark to Jonathan, Brandi, and Tony’s youngest son, TJ, and celebrating the Mardi Gras holiday with his sister and friends. Mark had a life-long love affair with sweet tea, mac-n-cheese, barbeque Vienna sausages, Pepsi, red velvet cake and ham and cheese sandwiches. He was a skilled chocolate milk and fried eggs chef but mediocre baker (at best). He will be remembered for his obsession with skulls, working with his hands, forgiving those who hurt him, and staying strong for those he loved. He spent many nights playing on a dart league, schooling friends in pool, and dominating games of Dominoes or Phase 10. Mark’s wishes were to be cremated, but he will be honored with a celebration of life on Saturday, March 13, 2021. As Mark would say, “it is what it is; so be sure to bring laughter, smiles, stories, and memories because he would not want anyone to mourn his death. Arrangements will be held at Juan’s Bar starting at 1 p.m.

Joseph Stephen Dominic LaBruno

Joseph Stephen Dominic LaBruno was called to eternal rest on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at the age of 68. Joseph passed away peacefully in the care of the best nurses and doctors at St. Tammany Hospital after a fifteenth day fight with Covid-19. Joseph was born on February 24, 1953 in New York to Joseph LaBruno an immigrant from Sicily, Italy, who served in the United States Navy, and Von-DaLlee Nungesser a tap dancer, head seamstress, and pianist from New York City. Joseph was quite a character to say the least, whose impact and influence to those around him was unforgettable. His strong Italian roots made him a passionate lover of food, family, dance, music, and possibly a drink or two too many. He was also quite the storyteller to those who listened, he could make one feel as if he or she were two, on the streets of the Bronx in the 1960’s. Joe recently was reconnected with some of his friends from that time, such as Bobby Gorwits, Robert Seiss, Rose Maggio, and Brian McGuckin, we must not leave out his Louisiana friends Jimmy Patton, Britt Hopkins, and Lods. Each one of these boys were a great part of Joe’s story. He was employed with the Hyatt Regency as an Air-Conditioning and Heating specialist in his early years. From there he attended truck driving school, where he received his certification and drove the big rigs for years for Randy Reboul who is still a friend of Joe’s today. Finally, Joe followed his heart and love of cooking, and received a diploma in Culinary Arts and Occupation. Joseph was employed at Butter Krisp Diner for Gil Copeland a dear friend for the past ten years. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, sister Debra Gatiana Veronica Murphy “Big Bertha,” niece Vanessa Ann Brunet, and fiancé Terri Serpas. Joseph is survived by his son Joseph Paul Rando, and niece/daughter VondaLeigh LaBruno Murphy, as well as nephews Bobby and Terri Murphy. He was also the uncle of Gage and John Brunet, Dale and Destiney Boudreaux, and Annalysse Casimiro, Giannia and Lauren Murphy, Dalton and Cage Rando. We must not leave out his adopted Chalmette family Adria, David, Melissa, Shannon, and Chandra Messick, Jason and Michelle Rando, Shana and Brianna Crochet, and Angela, Bob, and Virginia Serpas. Joseph LaBruno’s Memorial Mass will be held on Friday, March 19, 2021 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, 2320 Paris Road, Chalmette, LA 70043 at Noon. We ask that friends and family join us. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. until Mass starts. A Celebration of his life will be held at Rocky & Carlos’ Restaurant immediately following the Mass, so that we may all enjoy some authentic Italian cuisine and reminisce about our times with Joe. Lena Randazzo Torres

Lena Randazzo Torres was born on January 29, 1921 in the small village of Docville (known for its scenic tunnel of oak trees) in St. Bernard Parish. The trees were planted by her father Salvador “Sam” Randazzo who was the overseer for Dr. L. A. “Doc” Meraux. The oldest of five children, Lena grew up on the Docville farm with her father, Sam, her mother, Petrina Livaccari Randazzo, her three brothers, Anthony “Tony’’, Lawrence, Manuel and her sister Camille. Together with her family members she contributed to the many chores associated with the work on the farm. As a teenager, one of her responsibilities was to assist “Doc” Meraux with the farm’s bookkeeping. It was through his insistence that she later attended Soule Business College in New Orleans. Women were first allowed to vote in the United States in 1920 less than a year before Lena was born. Active in politics her entire life, Lena served as the first female poll commissioner in St. Bernard Parish at the age of 2l launching an unprecedented 70-year history in politics. A graduate of Maumus High School and fresh out of Soule Business College in 1940 she began a career in public service that would leave an indelible legacy in St. Bernard Parish. As a young Clerk of Court staff member she studied, practiced and respected the role and responsibilities of the Clerk’s Office - later transforming it into a model for Clerk’s Offices across the State of Louisiana. Lena met Sidney Torres at a political rally in 1942, and married him the following March. Two children, Lena Nunez (the late Leander G. Nunez, Sr.) and Sidney D. Torres III (Roberta Burns) were born of the union. Her husband Sidney was elected Clerk of Court in 1956 and Lena served as Chief Deputy until his death in 1988. She was appointed Clerk of Court and then elected that same year, unopposed, and served for 24 years. During her over 70 years in public service, Lena built a reputation for always being on the job and available to anyone in need of assistance. Her dedication and commitment to the citizens she represented, who she considered as family, was her trademark. Most notably, and within days following Hurricane Katrina, Lena was in her office where some areas had been submerged in water as high as nine feet. The criminal department was the hardest hit, but with the District Attorney’s office on the 2nd floor, she obtained copies and reconstructed some 68,000 active criminal files. She received help from the Supreme Court to freeze dry damaged records, providing a less than 5 percent loss. With assistance from other Louisiana Clerk’s, their staffs, members of her own staff able to return, Lena reopened the Clerk’s office in the Courthouse lobby in a matter of weeks, providing residents with vital records necessary to start rebuilding their lives. Besides her decades of public service, Lena has been active in numerous professional, civic and Philanthropic organizations and was instrumental in forming the St. Bernard Business & Professional Women’s Club. In 1963 she was chosen Woman of the Year by that group and later received its Community Involvement Award and Lifetime Achievement for Public Service to the People of St. Bernard Parish. She was also the recipient of the Alliance for Good Government President’s Award, Louisiana Center for Women in Government and Business’ Hall of Fame Award, Louisiana State University School of Medicine Strength In Age Award, Civic Award, Sports Hall of Fame, American Italian Society and recognized multiple times by the Louisiana State Legislature, Governor and Lieutenant Governor for her many years of loyal, dedicated and ethical services to the citizens of the State. In 1949 she helped organize the Our Lady of Lourdes Carnival Club to raise money to purchase an organ for the Church located in Violet, Louisiana. The organization has continued its mission of raising funds for the Church over the past 70 years. She was crowned Queen of the Lourdes Ball in 1958. She served as the Chairman, St. Bernard Chapter March of Dimes, Board of Directors Louisiana Clerks of Court Association, St. Bernard Society for Crippled Children, Board of Directors, St. Bernard Bank, Serra Club, Kiwanis Club, The Elenians Club (charter member), Canary Island Descendants Association and Los Islenos Cultural & heritage Society. She was also inducted into the New Orleans Women of Fashion’s Prix d’Elegance Hall of Fame. In addition to her two children, Lena has three grandsons, Leander G. Nunez, Jr. (Robin Soignet) Sidney D. Torres IV (Selina White), the late Anthony “Tony” Torres, two great granddaughters, Carlee Marie Nunez and Sefina Donecia Torres and two great grandsons, Sidney D. Torres V and Drew Anthony Nunez. Some call her St. Bernard Parish’s “First Lady.” Lena Randazzo Torres, however, measured success not so much by the accolades and achievements, but by the number of people she was able to help during her many years of public service. She would often tell others, “I enjoyed working and I enjoyed helping people, I tried to do all that I could.” Special thanks to her caregivers: Donnetta Maurice, Sharron Payne, Helen Shelton, Cheryl Billew, Marita Lee, and Edrena Gillen; Dr. Paul Verrette, Monique Young, and St. Bernard Parish / Ochsner Hospital. Also special thanks to Charles and Kim Bienvenu of The Palms Too Restaurant and Tommy Tommaseo of Rocky and Carlo’s Restaurant. In lieu of flowers, if you wish to do so, please donate to a Catholic Church in St. Bernard Parish: Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church, 2320 Paris Rd., Chalmette, LA 70043; Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 2621 Colonial Blvd., Violet, LA70092 or Saint Bernard Catholic Church, 2805 Bayou Rd., St. Bernard, LA 70085. James Pink Whittington passed away peacefully on February 26, 2021, at the V.A. Hospital in New Orleans, LA, at the age of 94. James is survived by his two sons, Thomas Jeffery Whittington and Michael Todd Whittington; by his grandchildren, Matthew Todd Whittington, Andrew Michael Whittington, Kyle Thomas Whittington, Codi Leigh Whittington, Dylon Taner Whittington, Chandler Tristen Whittington, and Christopher James Whittington; by his great-grandchildren, Andrew Michael Whittington Jr., James Matthew Whittington and another on the way; by his younger brother, Alfred Edward Whittington; and his sisters-in-law, Euna Mae Dillon Kelly (Jerry Clark Kelly), and Jeanette Gaddis Dillon. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, to name a few; James “JM” Milton Whittington (Jean), Catherine Whittington, Todd Edward Whittington (Alyssa), Sondra Dillon Looper, Lisa Whittington, Rhonda Kelly Guy, and Rick Guy; and by many friends who respected him because of the respect he gave to others. He is preceded in death by his parents, the late Susan Ida Rushing Whittington and Robert Marshall Whittington; by his siblings, the late Robert Marshall Whittington, Jr., Clyde Milton Whittington, and Robert Earl Whittington; by his first wife, the late Lucille Weddis Whittington; by his second wife, the late Betty Joann Dillon Whittington; by his only daughter, the late Theresa Adele Whittington; his youngest son, the late William Jason Whittington; his oldest son, the late James Pink Whittington, Jr.; and his beautiful granddaughter, the late Brooke Michele Whittington. He was also preceded in death by many in-laws that he respected dearly; his father and mother-in-law, the late Rufus Bill Dillon and Louella Mae Rushing Dillon; and his brother-in-law, the late William J. Dillon. James was born in Smithdale, Mississippi, on July 2, 1926. He attended Tylertown School through eighth grade but left school at an early age to help support his family. As a child, he took on the responsibilities of a man and got his first job hauling logs, before moving up to working at the sawmill. He made the heroic decision to serve his country at the age of 17, at the beginning of World War II. Because he was so young, his Mother and Father had to sign the enlistment papers before he could enlist. Little did he know he would be aboard the Admirable Class Minesweeper, USS Superior (AM 311). The Admirable Class was the largest and most successful class of minesweeper in the United States Navy during World War II. Typically, the Minesweeper detected and removed mines before the rest of the fleet arrived, thereby ensuring safe passage for the rest of the convoy. They were also charged with antisubmarine warfare duties with a rear-mounted depth charge rack, and a forward-firing rear-mounted hedgehog. Because of his incomparable work ethic, James started as an apprentice but worked his way to Seaman Second Class, and ultimately Seaman First Class James Pink Whittington. The USS Superior participated in the final struggles in the Pacific Ocean against the Empire of Japan during the end of the war. After the war, James met his first wife, Lucille Weddis Whittington. They had one child, James Pink Whittington, Jr. During that time, he was living in Rosalind, MS, and commuting every day to Kaiser Aluminum, in Chalmette, LA. After a mere six months working in the pot room, he was promoted to General Foreman in the Pot Relining Department, a job he held for 32 years. James eventually bought a house in Chalmette, to avoid a commute from Mississippi. James’ young family was struck by tragedy when his first wife, Lucille, developed breast cancer and passed away at the age of 26. A few years later, he met Betty Joann Dillon, whom he dated and married in the early ‘60s. Betty and James wasted no time having children, having both Thomas and Theresa in 1963, followed by Michael in 1965, and William in 1968. Tragedy was again no stranger to James’ doorstep. He lost his only daughter, Theresa, in 1982, his wife Betty in 1999, and his son William in 2004. James proved to be a ballast for his family, giving them a solid foundation, and staying strong for them, even as he suffered immeasurable loss. Anyone who knew James knows the kind of man he was. He had the will to thrive through hard times, he never met a stranger, and he was courteous and respectful of everyone he met. He did anything he could to help the people around him and never expected anything in return. He was the definition of “selfless” and our family was blessed beyond measure, by his example. If any of us become half the man he was, we will have succeeded in this life. James made his own funeral arrangements and desired no formal services. A private burial, attended by immediate family, will be held in Mississippi on Saturday, March 13, 2021. In lieu of sending flowers to the family, please consider donating to the Heart Society or the American Cancer Society - two organizations that were dear to his heart. To sign and view the family guestbook, please visit www.stbernardmemorial.com.

Loving father of Dwayne “DJ” Guidry, Jr. (April) and Jonathan Guidry (Mariah) and step-father of Steven Crawford, Jr. (ReBecca) and Amber Crawford (Michail). Proud grandfather of Adalyn, Davin and Avalyn Guidry, Jonathan, Dreux and Oaklynn Guidry, Haylee, Tyler, Chandler, Macie, Embree (Benoit) and Raegan Crawford, and Bentley and Emily Martin. Beloved son of Buster Joseph and Nancy (Braud) Guidry. Brother of Nanette Johnson (Bill). Beloved son-in-law of Rosalie Oubre and the late Wayne Oubre. Brother-in-law of Wayne (Butch) Oubre, Jr. (Margaret) and Wendi Bowman (Ed). Honored Godfather of Danielle Jiles Plummer. Adored boyfriend of Krewe of Cleopatra’s Daina’s Divas. He is also survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who have become family, who will miss him dearly. Dwayne had a one of a kind personality, he could be the life of the party or “The Grinch,” you never knew who was going to show up. He loved his wife with his whole heart and there wasn’t anything he wouldn’t do with or for her to make her happy; from eloping; to decorating Mardi Gras glasses; to dress shopping even though he was colorblind; to making class treats for their grandchildren; to Black Friday shopping, the list can go on forever. He enjoyed every minute they spent together and always tried to make the best of it. He cherished his relationships with his four children and was very proud of their many accomplishments. He spent much of his younger years with DJ and Jonathan, watching them play baseball, ride motorcycles and just enjoying their time together. He strived to be the best father and it showed through the loving relationships he had with his sons. He adored his fourteen grandchildren and never missed an event if he could help it. He attended many dance recitals, sporting events, school functions, religious events, and birthday parties with a smile on his face. He is deeply missed by Nyla, his dog and best friend. Most of his days and nights this last year were spent holding her on the sofa and playing with her in the yard. She now spends her days sitting in his sofa spot, watching the door waiting for him to come home. While our days won’t ever be the same without him, we know he is at peace and will be watching and protecting us from above, until we meet again. Family and friends attended a Visitation and Funeral Mass at St. Rosalie Catholic Church, 600 2nd Ave., Harvey, LA 70058, Saturday, March 20, 2021. Interment: Private.
