Vincent W. "Bill" Peperone passed away on December 5, 2021, at the age of 75. He was diagnosed with lung cancer in March and died peacefully early Sunday morning with his loving wife and daughter by his side. Bill was a baby boomer. He was born August 30, 1946, and often "enjoyed" Louisiana hurricanes on his birthday. He was the eldest child of first-generation Sicilian-Americans. He grew up in Old Harvey surrounded by family. His mother and three of her sisters married four brothers, their many watchful eyes leaving no room for mischief. As a child, he sacrificed playing baseball and participating in other childhood activities to help make the famous sausage in his parents' business - Peperone's Meat Market on 4th Street in Harvey. He took two buses and a ferry to St. Aloysius High School yet continued to help his parents in the market after school. This helped shape the character of a strong, dependable, yet quiet man. Bill earned a BS Degree in Industrial Technology from Louisiana State University, where he met his wife of 55 years, Faith Wilson Peperone. Her vivacious and outgoing spirit was a nice balance to his quiet and reserved demeanor. Bill began his career working as the assistant for the top executives at LP&L and NOPSI, spending half a day with each immediately prior to their merger. He continued working with the new company, Entergy, until his retirement in 2011 after 42 years of service. He served in many capacities, including Sales, Operations, Government Affairs, and Economic Development. With Faith, Bill raised two children – Keith and Tiffany. They mourned the loss of their son Keith in 2005. Bill supported his children's activities, and diligently helped with homework and school projects. He enthusiastically attended their sporting events at Brother Martin and LSU. He taught his children steady determination and resilience. One became a dentist and the other a lawyer. Not only could he fix and build things in the house, but he also used his gift of building creatively. He enjoyed carving fruit for entertaining and parties and carving pumpkins for his grandchildren. He could make delicious chocolate mousse cheesecake, fudge, and pepperoni omelets. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling, especially cruises in Europe with Faith. He was passionate about public service and economic development. Most important to him, he served as Chairman of the Jefferson Parish Economic Development Commission (JEDCO) and its longest serving board member and enjoyed several years on the board while his daughter was JEDCO's general counsel. He also served as a Commissioner on the St. Bernard Parish Economic Development Commission and a board member of Greater New Orleans, Inc. He served as Vice Chairman of the Jefferson Parish Workforce Commission and Chairman of the International Community Development Council Board of Trustees. He served on the Board of the World Affairs Council of New Orleans and was an officer of the Entergy Louisiana Political Action Committee. His accomplishments included being Certified Trade Show Marketing Professional, a certified Economic Development Finance Professional, a certified Professional Community and Economic Development Professional, a graduate of the Community Development Institute and a graduate of the Economic Development Institute at the University of Oklahoma. Dorothy Louise "Dot" O’Toole Benge
Dorothy Louise O’Toole Benge was a woman of passion, wit, generosity and accomplishment. She passed away at home on Wednesday, December 15, 2021, at the age of 88 years. She will be greatly missed and always remembered. Dot was born at her grandparents’ Esplanade Avenue home in New Orleans, LA, on September 23, 1933. Her parents were Robert James O’Toole of Grand Rapids, MI, and Marie Louise Molero, of St. Bernard Parish. Her father was a captain in the Merchant Marine who served in World War II ferrying ships from Europe before being posted to the Panama Canal. At a young age during the war, Dot flew with her mother to Panama to stay with her father and lived in what was known as the “American Sector” of the canal zone. As a child in Panama, she collected autographs of the Hollywood movie stars of the day and even dined with some at her father’s table as they made the passage through the canal. As a young girl, she developed a love of history exploring the environs of the French Quarter while living with her younger sister, Patricia C. O’Toole, and her dearly beloved grandparents, Manuel Molero and Camille Silvera. Her grandfather founded the Delacroix Corporation in 1929, which currently occupies the same location of the French Quarter’s historic fur district on Decatur Street since 1939. Mr. and Mrs. Molero were community leaders in St. Bernard Parish and from them Dorothy gained her understanding of duty to family and community. Throughout her life, she embraced the values of family, home, heritage and community. Dot attended St. Joseph’s Academy, studied business administration at Tulane University and earned an Elementary Education Degree from St. Mary’s Dominican College. As her many students can attest, teaching was her true calling in life. Even when she retired from education and went to work at the Delacroix Corporation following in the footsteps of her grandfather and mother, she continued to volunteer and teach reading to English as a Second Language and learning-disabled adults and children, counsel parents on education choices and to champion educational causes. Dot and her husband, Donald C. Benge, with their dear friends Joan and Anthony Pizzolato founded Jefferson Academy in Metairie with the goal of offering a private school education at a reasonable price. Jefferson Academy taught from Montessori School through the Eighth Grade. There are generations of JA students who remember Mrs. Benge, or Mrs. B with fondness and regard whether as Assistant Principal or as teacher. Her eldest son, Robert Michael Benge, shared her love of education and followed her into teaching at Jefferson Academy. Although the Benges closed and sold the school in 1984, the generations of students who received the caring quality education offered there have maintained a steadfast loyalty to their school, to Mrs. Benge and the Benge family. Upon the closing of Jefferson Academy, Dot taught in the Jefferson Parish Public School System at Frederick Douglass Elementary School on the West Bank. At Frederick Douglass, she continued sharing her gift of creating a love of learning in her students. She formed dear relationships with her students that she never forgot. Between her private and public-school tenures, Dot taught elementary school, including special education classes, for almost 30 years. During her time teaching school, Dot also was an enthusiastic and prodigious grower of African Violets. She was a member of the African Violet Society of America and the Dixie African Violet Society. She grew, showed African Violets and also served as a Judge at various competitions in Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Ultimately, she even hybridized her own miniature African Violets. She was featured in a segment by local TV journalist, Angela Hill, filmed in her Metairie home discussing her success with African Violets. One of her minis was named “Angela Hill” in honor of the local anchor and another was named “My Friend Phung” for one of her students who was tragically killed in an automobile accident. In 1989, Dorothy went to work at Delacroix Corporation. She is the immediate Past President of the corporation and was serving as Chairman of the Board at the time of her death. She was a loyal and steadfast steward of the corporation as both Past President and Chairman. As part of her business life in New Orleans, she helped found the Upper Decatur Association with Chef Duke LoCicero from Café Giovanni to create a community of the various businesses at the upper end of Decatur Street. She served as the Association’s treasurer and secretary for its beginning years. At that time, she also became a tour guide and conducted tours through the Friends of the Cabildo, serving on their Board for a time. Friendships made in those years have lasted to this day. Dot was incredibly active in Los Islenos Society beginning in 1991. As a descendant of the Molero family, she traced her family’s origins in Louisiana and St. Bernard Parish to 1778 when the first Canarian colonists aboard the Santisimo Sacramento arrived on behalf of the King of Spain. Much of the Molero family came from the Island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands. She had two ancestors who fought in the American Revolution and another who fought in the Battle of New Orleans. As part of her closeness to her grandparents, she developed a proficiency in Spanish and a love of her Canarian-Spanish cultural heritage. She co-edited a cookbook which focused on the culinary traditions of the Islenos, Los Islenos Cookbook, Spanish Louisiana Recipes. In addition, she pushed to have the Canarian heritage included in state history textbooks, so the rich and diverse Spanish part of Louisiana’s heritage would be taught throughout the State. She served for over two decades intermittently as chairman and co-chairman of Los Islenos Fiesta, supporting efforts to emphasize the cocina Canaria in the fiesta menu. She began collecting and wearing traje tipico or traditional clothing of the Canaries particularly during presentations before area schools, civic organizations, genealogical and historical groups. She purchased clothing in the Canary Islands to contribute to a docent program for students at Chalmette High School. And, she and her dear friend, the late Bertin “Bert” Esteves, Jr., made several thousand presentations that began as part of the Friends of the Cabildo Ghostly Galavant throughout the metro New Orleans area, Baton Rouge, Alexandria, Mississippi, Texas and in Ingenio, Gran Canaria and the City of Agüimes in Gran Canaria, which is a sister city of St. Bernard. One friend said, that with her “indefatigable zeal” she “literally helped to increase awareness of Spanish Louisiana and the Islenos Canarios globally!” Dot was elected President of Los Islenos Heritage and Cultural Society for four terms, 1999-2001 and 2005-2011, and is, to date, the longest serving president of the Society. She and her aunt, Mabel Molero Quatroy, donated additional land to St. Bernard Parish to expand Los Islenos Museum Complex. She participated in the development of the Los Islenos master plan by Koch and Wilson Architects, championed the establishment of Los Islenos Historic Village which resulted in the relocation of five historic structures from eastern St. Bernard Parish to the museum complex and served on the rebuilding committee which resulted in the rebuilt/restored Los Islenos Museum Complex following the catastrophic devastation from Hurricane Katrina. Her legendary stubbornness and irrepressible nature served her well in meetings with parish and federal government officials, restoration architects and building contractors. While generous with donations of property and funding, her most valuable contribution was the gift of her time, energy, talent, intellect and excellent leadership skills in seeing the Complex restored. In 2016, during the 40th anniversary of Los Islenos Society, St. Bernard Parish recognized her outstanding commitment to the community with a proclamation designating her an honored citizen of St. Bernard Parish. Sociedad Espanola joined in recognizing her remarkable contributions to preserving the Islenos heritage of St. Bernard and Louisiana in 2018. While grateful for the recognition, the true reward for Dot was the work of preserving this unique heritage and culture for future generations. Throughout her life, her guiding principles were love of and commitment to family. If asked of her best accomplishment and greatest joy, she would say “my family” without hesitation. Family was first, foremost and her everything. Sadly, she was predeceased in life by her grandparents, parents, her husband, Donald Benge, her son, David Benge, her son-in-law, Monte Brown, and her cousins, Henry LaBonne and James Quatroy. She had four loving children, Robert Michael Benge (Joan), David Manuel Benge (deceased), Thomas Alan Benge, Sr., (Denise) and Melinda Benge Brown (Bobby). Her children, Mike, Tom and Melinda followed her into work at Delacroix Corporation and strive to continue the legacy she left with the support of her “work family” at the corporation. As GeeGee, she will be sorely missed by her beloved grandchildren, Thomas Alan Benge, Jr. (Olivia), Blaine Benge Moncrief (Chad), Fallon Alisha Walters and Amanda Marie Benge. And, her adored great-grandchildren, Braden, Caitlyn, Bennett, Hudson, Colton, Stella and Bree will feel the loss of their wonderfully fun and loving GeeGee. She leaves her sister, Patricia C. O’Toole, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins who she embraced with her generous spirit and love. She also leaves her “Delacroix people,” her work family, to carry on in her memory. As she never met a stranger in her life, she leaves a long list of friends who will miss her grand passion for life. Daniel Irwin Deichmann
The world lost a one-of-a-kind, larger-than-life man on November 15, 2021, when Daniel Irwin Deichmann passed into eternal life. Dan was born in New Orleans, LA, to Arthur John Deichmann, Sr. and Bertha Maestri Deichmann, the youngest of five children. He moved to Metairie, Louisiana, in 1968 and raised his family there. Dan is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Linda Peters Deichmann, his three children, Melissa Deichmann Evans Good (Jim Good) of Arlington, Virginia, Scott Daniel Deichmann (Angela) of Chicago, IL, and Melinda Deichmann Marengo (Trey Marengo) of Metairie, and four grandchildren, Avery Marie and Caroline Grace Deichmann and Alexander James and Zoey Grace Marengo. He is also survived by his sister, Rita Deichmann Case and his brother, Richard E. Deichmann, Sr., and many beloved nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, brother, Arthur J. Deichmann Jr., sister, Dorothy Deichmann Prohaska, and son-in-law, Timothy O'Donovan Evans. Dan attended St. Paul's School in Covington, LA, from ages eight through 18 and he attributed his strong Catholic faith to the positive influence that the Christian Brothers had on him during these formative years. He graduated from St. Paul's School and then continued his studies at Southeastern Louisiana College in Hammond, LA, where he graduated with a major in economics. A born salesman, Dan worked his way up to department manager at J.C. Penney in Lakeside Mall, where he had worked during college breaks. Dan was a member of the US Naval Reserve and was stationed in San Diego, CA, preparing for deployment to Viet Nam when a medical condition was discovered earning him an honorable discharge. He continued his work at Penney's through his early marriage, and eventually parlayed his love of food and sales into a successful career in the gourmet food industry. He began at Carnation as a salesman and quickly was recruited to become an account manager at Specialty Foods. He then advanced to regional and national sales manager positions at Sanna Dairies, Trappey's, McIlhenny Corporation, and Bruce Foods. The local cuisines and culture of Southern Louisiana held a special place in Dan's heart and belly, and his Southern cooking and Cajun joke-telling, complete with accent, only improved with age. These skills also elevated his salesmanship to near caricature-like status and attracted both professional successes and many friendships over the years; He kept friends and colleagues well-fed, and entertained. Throughout his years of business travel, Dan became adopted family to many of his colleagues-turned friends. He was known for the "drop in" - frequently arriving to a friend's house with a favorite cut of steak to toss on the grill, or with the ingredients to whip up a pot of gumbo on the home's stove. Dan never met a stranger. A lifelong sportsman, Dan spent his early years hunting, fishing, and trawling with his Uncle Del, cousins, and dear friend Jay Dubret at the camp in Violet, LA - a camp that he helped to rebuild after a fire. As a student, and as an adult, Dan also had a passion for sports. In addition to the sports that he pursued in high school, he continued to play adult league basketball at Johnny Bright Playground well until adulthood. He translated his love of basketball to his coaching Biddy Basketball at Johnny Bright, where his son, Scott, played for seven years. During Scott's five years at Jesuit, Dan could be found cheering Scott on from the bleachers. He treasured the camaraderie shared with other Jesuit basketball families and was a known organizer of crawfish boils and other dinners for the families of Jesuit players. Dan also enjoyed volunteering his time and donating food products to causes at St. Clement of Rome, where his three children attended elementary school, and to Jesuit and Dominican, where they attended high school. His generosity of spirit was evident in all he did. Dan's greatest passion was his family. From his early married life and fatherhood, until his later years in the role of Grampy, Dan reveled in his wife, children, and grandchildren. Throughout his life Dan's happiest moments were those that he spent connecting with his loved ones. He supported their interests and passions as they evolved over the years and never tired of the time and resources dedicated to these pursuits. Dan ensured that the Deichmann home was a gathering spot for the kids and their friends by providing entertainment in the form of a swimming pool, pool table, dart board, and a complete compliment of snacks. Visitors were frequently offered "parting gifts" in the form of Tabasco golf balls or hot sauce. With his grandkids, he looked forward to playing Uno, Battleship, and Go Fish, and even begrudgingly played Monopoly. Dan was known to "razz" the family, and anyone who would engage in his antics. Corny jokes were standard and nobody was immune. He had a love for LSU and Saints football and was somewhat fearful for Linda's blood pressure during her enthusiastic game viewing with him. Much to his doctor's chagrin, Dan was known for his homemade pralines and chocolate sauce served over Blue Bell ice cream. He remembered everyone's favorite foods and made sure to keep the house stocked with preferred treats when kids and grandkids came to visit. Friends and neighbors were also likely to receive personal deliveries of preferred treats or his homemade soup du jour. Other hobbies included television remote control mastery and aggressive napping, often practiced simultaneously. He was famous for his well-polished shoes, his firm handshake, warm embraces, back rubs, and being an all-around great guy. He deeply cherished his friendships with Mike Bailey and Dan McGrath, whom he loved as brothers. Dan was a man whose quiet faith was evident in all he did. His devotion to the Blessed Mother carried him through life's difficulties. Dan always preached the importance of being a person of character - that a man is only as good as his word. His primary goal in life was to create a good, Christian, family. How lucky for us to have had such a beautiful model of faith and family. We love you and will miss you every day until we see you again. Special thanks to Dr. Marilyn Marshall at Ochsner Hospital who enabled his attainment of his last three wishes, and to the many wonderful members of the nursing staff who cared for Dan, listened to his jokes, and made Dan's final weeks more joyful and comfortable. Relatives and friends of the family attended a visitation and Memorial Mass on Monday, December 20, 2021 at St. Benilde Catholic Church, 1901 Division St., Metairie LA. Interment: Metairie Cemetery, Metairie, LA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dan's memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or donate online. The online guestbook is available at www.leitzeaganfuneralhome.com.
