Blanche Louise Diebold passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the age of 87. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some way throughout her life. She was the beloved mother of Phylis D. Aiston, Philip J. Diebold (Cindy), Julia Bordelon and the late Carolyn D. Kramer (Jerry). Daughter of the late Bernard and Naomi Swayne Albers. Sister of Shirley A. Bergeron (Joel), Bernard Albers Jr. (Judy), Mary A. LaPointe (Clifford) and the late Sylvia A. Standeford, Justine A. Nicolich (Raymond) and Harry C. Albers (Frances). She is also survived and fondly remembered by her seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Blanche was born in New Orleans, LA and was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish before settling in Pearl River, LA. She was a longtime member of the Telephone Pioneers and a dedicated and honored volunteer for WYES and the Multiple Sclerosis Society. She was well loved and will be deeply missed by her family and by all those whose lives she touched. Emmett “Red” Mortensen was a resident of Baton Rouge and a native of St. Bernard Parish, and passed away March 28, 2017 in Baton Rouge at age 88. He was a retired pipefitter with Local 60 in New Orleans and a U.S. Army Corporal receiving the World War II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal. He was an avid New Orleans Saints football fan and L.S.U. baseball fan. Red is survived by his step son Juan Quinton and wife, Beryl; sister, Myrtle Schenck; brother, Donald Mortensen; grandchildren, Reade Quinton, M.D., and Lee Quinton, PhD; step-grandchildren, Vince Tividad, and Lance Tividad; great grandchildren, Logan, Gabriel, Caleb and Lucas Quinton; step-granddaughter, Harmony Tividad; and nieces, Joell Lucas, Charlene Parent, Michelle Brumfield and Sheila Elsensohn. On Monday, March 27, 2017 our beloved and cherished matriarch, Joyce Marie Vigneaux DeBarbieris was granted her angel wings. She was called to join her late husband and soul mate of 53 years, Roy Eugene DeBarbieris. “Memaw” passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Mother of Don, Debbie, Glenn, Gary, Keith, Susie, Scott, Linda, Ann, Gail, Ray, Sandra, Janet, and Cindy. Daughter of the late Elvira Bertus and Sidney Vigneaux. Also survived by her 37 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. She was born December 4, 1929, a native of New Orleans and resident of St. Bernard Parish for 55 years. A spiritually strong and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and retired teacher of 25 years whose life was exemplary of kindness and survival. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education from Ursuline Academy. Throughout her teaching career, she touched many lives at St. Louise De Marillac Elementary School. With her strong religious faith and physical strength, which was an inspiration to all, she survived Hurricane Betsy in 1965, kidney cancer in 1968, and Hurricane Katrina in 2005. She was a pillar of spiritual strength. Throughout all the trials and obstacles that life threw at her, not once was her faith shaken. It was her belief that “All things are possible with God.” Sadly, she will be missed by all. Her values, faith, love, and memories will live on in each of us forever. Madren Etta Kemp Seybold
Madren Etta Kemp Seybold, a faithful servant of Christ, went peacefully to be with her Lord on March 21, 2017 at her home in Irvine, Orange Co., California at the age of 82. Madren was a longtime resident of Lacombe, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, and spent many years in the New Orleans area. She was retired from Ochsner Medical Center, where she served with dedication for several decades as secretary for Dr. John Ochsner, whom she fondly called “Dr. John.” She spent the last years of her life with her beloved son, daughter-in-law, and grandson in Irvine, CA, where she enjoyed her daily walks in the sunshine and made many new friends. All who knew her in Lacombe, at Ochsner, and in California recognized her love of family and friends. Madren always went out of her way to give of herself to others. Whenever there was a need, she was there without hesitation and without waiting to be asked, providing help, support, and love. Born January 1, 1935, in Salem, Walthall County, Mississippi, Madren was proud of her hard-working family. She was the daughter of Edith Otera Pigott and Milton “Mitt” Kemp. Her paternal grandparents were William Wesley Kemp and Sarah Angeline Jones, and her maternal grandparents were Albert Webb Pigott and Ettie Olivia Spence. In 1952, Madren married William Ike “Bill” Crouch in Chalmette, St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana. Together they had two children, William Gary and Linda Jean, who lived only three days. She later married Thomas Edward Walls. On September 30, 1976, she married Summa Caldwell Seybold in Metairie, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. Madren and Summa served in many different capacities at the Lacombe United Methodist Church, where they made lifelong friends and shared many great meals. Madren treasured her years with Summa living in their “little slice of heaven” they called Talking Tree Camp, and lovingly cared for him until he passed away in March, 2014, in Lacombe, Louisiana. She spent her final years with her beloved son and his family in Irvine, CA, became a member of Woodbridge Community Church, and enjoyed weekly Bible study with the senior adults of the fellowship. Madren Seybold is survived by her son, William Gary Crouch, his wife, Sandra Mollere Crouch, and their son, Garrison Mollere Crouch. She is also survived by her sister, Shannon Mae Kemp Midkiff and husband Rev. William Earl Midkiff, and her brother, Milton Sherwood Kemp and wife Ruby Lainfiesta Deleon Kemp. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Christopher Harold Beard, Brenda Beard Morse and husband Thomas Stephen, Karen Lynn Beard, Naomi Ruth Midkiff Youngberg and husband, Barry, Nathan Hugh Midkiff and wife, Mary Lee Ellis Midkiff, Miriam Claire Midkiff Swanson and husband, John, Joel Kemp Midkiff and wife, Debbi Rebar Midkiff, Sarah Elaine Midkiff, Sherwood Scott Kemp and wife, Angela Ann Lacava Kemp, and her late nephew’s widow, Christina Bishop Kemp. In addition to her parents, Madren was preceded in death by her daughter, Linda Jean Crouch, her husband, Summa Seybold, a sister, Daisy Brumfield Beard, brother-in-law, Harold E. Beard, and a nephew, Milton William “Will” Kemp. Madren’s final resting place will be with her beloved Summa and baby Linda Jean in the family cemetery, Spence Cemetery, Salem, Walthall Co., Mississippi, following a private ceremony with the family she cherished. Sister of Ethel Benson and the late Louis DeGruy Jr., Myrtle Wendling, Amelia Breale and Annie Dendinger. Proud grandmother of Randy Lee Slavich Jr., Sabrina Trusty, Jeffrey Kansas, Cheri Rodriguez, Kathleen Kansas and Leslie Nixon. She is also survived and fondly remembered by her five great-grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Barbara was born in New Orleans, LA, and was a longtime resident of Chalmette and Arabi. She was a member and volunteer for the Council on Aging and enjoyed honoring our troops with the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. She loved organizing bus tours for family, friends and members of the Council on Aging and enjoyed running a booth at the annual fair at Prince of Peace. She was well loved and affectionately known for her good nature and very generous heart. Giuseppe “Joe” Gioe
Giuseppe “Joe” Gioe entered into eternal peace on April 5, 2017 after a long illness surrounded by friends and loved ones at the age of 81. He was born in Alcamo, Sicily on April 30, 1935. He was known to his friends and family as a gentle, loving and hardworking man who worked each and every day to realize his American dream. He arrived in the U.S. in 1953 from his homeland accompanied by his parents, Gasper and Guiseppa and his sister Maria. They had left their war torn home to find a new life in the New World. He grew up as a farmer working in olive groves and vineyards with his father and brothers. The farming was a passion that the carried with him to his new country. Shortly after his arrival he met the love of his life, Angelina Miserendino and they were married a short time after. A marriage that would last for 58 years. Together they had one son who then blessed him with four grandchildren and one great-grandson. He remained till the day of his passing completely devoted to their wellbeing and happiness. In 1965 he and his brothers and sister opened the iconic Rocky and Carlos’s Restaurant in Chalmette. He would work there until his retirement in 2003. He became acquainted with hundreds of customers who to this day speak of his kindness and generosity. He spent his retirement years living out his dream on his own farm in Bush, LA. For the last 14 years he shared the bounty of his soil with friends and family. He was a devout Catholic who each year would spend countless hours with his wife working on St. Joseph Alters throughout the metro area. Much of his own harvest would find its way to so many altars for so many years. He is preceded in heaven by his loving parents, brothers, Vincent, Sasa, Carlo, Mario, Leonardo and sister Anna. He is survived by his devoted wife Angelina, Son Gasper, Daughter-in-law Dr. Mary (Christy) Gioe, his sister Maria, 4 Grandchildren, Timothy and his wife Sarah and their child Thomas, Christopher, Jonathan and Katherine. His lasting legacy will be carried on by them because of the work ethic and love he showed and taught them throughout their lives. He forever will be in our hearts. Our family would like to thank the extraordinary staff of Notre Dame Hospice. Their kindness and caring was very loving and comforting during his illness. Daughter of Cheryl Acosta and Joseph Perez Sr. (Suzanne). Granddaughter of Ursula Repath and the late Leo Ivy Turnbull Sr. & Herman J. Repath and the late Louis Perez Sr. & Theresa Marie Perez Jones. Sister of Corey Acosta, Joseph Perez Jr., Cassandra Perez, Amanda Perez and Melissa Perez. Niece of Gloria Fortuna, Jennifer Jones, Wayne Turnbull (Cindy) and the late Leo Turnbull Jr., Henry Perez, Benny Perez, Oneil Perez, Sidney Perez, Leroy Perez, James Perez, Louis Perez Jr., Ernest Rodrigue and Danny Rodrigue. She is also survived and fondly remembered by Lois Jackson (the late John), Mary Spires and many nieces and nephews. Tina was born on December 17, 1971 in New Orleans, LA. She was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish and a former resident of Grandview, IN for 6 years. She was a graduate of Globe University in Minnesota and Daymar College in Owensburo, KY. Tina enjoyed music and spending time sharpening her firearm skills at the St. Bernard Indoor Shooting Center. She will be forever remembered and deeply missed by her family and friends. Eric Matthew Kuehl passed away at his home on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at the age of 30. Son of Gordon Kuehl Sr. and Jenny Rome Kuehl. Brother of Gordon Kuehl Jr. and the late Marie Jeanne Kuehl. Grandson of Erin Kuehl and the late Wilbert and Grace Kuehl & the late Earl and Jeanne Rome. Also survived by numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.Eric was a native of Chalmette, LA and a current resident of New Orleans, LA. He graduated from St. Mark Catholic School in 2000 and was a 2004 graduate of Brother Martin High School. Eric attended the University of Southern Mississippi where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Eric was proud to work in the hospitality industry and bring joy and happiness to those around him. He was a dedicated member of the Barman’s Fund of Louisiana, Inc., a group of service professionals that donate tips and volunteer time to build a stronger community with local charitable organizations. Eric was also a lifetime volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, through which he built many houses for those in need. Kenneth Michael Lobre was born on Monday, June 1, 1970 and called home by Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to his Eternal rest on Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017, at 2:15 p.m. at the age of 46. Kenneth was the beloved son of Ken and Daralynne Lobre, Cherished brother of Kelly Croll and her husband Clint. He also survived by his girlfriend Mary Kabel Smith and many thoughtful cousins and friends. Kenneth was the loving grandson of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Lobre & the late Mr. and Mrs. William Young. Kenny was a fun loving, compassionate and spiritual person who believed in the power of prayer. He was also an avid LSU and Saints fan. Kenny loved people and all animals, especially his kittens. He enjoyed his days playing football at Chalmette High School. The family would like to acknowledge their appreciation to the entire staff of Ferncrest Manor for their caring love and support during our son’s illness and also to Compassus Hospice. Melvin Virgil Phillips passed away at his home on Saturday, April 8, 2017 at the age of 87. Beloved husband of Audrey Guillot Phillips. Loving father of Joe Hickson, Wayne Hickson (Joni) and the late David Hickson. Stepfather of Bridget Petric (Marko), Brenda Brown (the late Edgar), Glenn Nunez Jr. (Gina) and Chet Nunez Sr. (Wendy). Son of the late Virgil Calvin Phillips and Jessie Eavenson Phillips. Brother of Betty Gray (Bob), Wanda O’Neil (Richard), Dot Hall (the late Pat), Evelyn Rodriguez (Henry Jr.), Debbie Walters (Gary) and the late James Phillips. He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren and his many nieces and nephews. Melvin was born on March 15, 1930 in Jones County, MS and was a retired barber. He was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish and a former resident of Kenner, LA. Melvin served as usher at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kenner, LA for many years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus of Kenner and a member of AARP - St. Tammany Chapter No. 5408. Melvin enjoyed working in his yard and gardening. Robert Joseph Smith passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at the age of 80. He is survived by his loving wife Audrey Matthews Smith of 52 years. Loving father of Terri Jo Gray, Stacey Smith, Sheila Smith and the late Cecilia Smith. Son of the late Eugene and Ida Lebreton Smith. Brother of Gloriette Kiern, Claudette Gereighty, Paulette Smith and the late Eugene “Junior” Smith, Alquin Smith, Mabel Guidroz Flott and Valerie Smith Crowe. Proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren, two late grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Robert was born on October 12, 1936 in New Orleans, LA and was a resident of St. Bernard Parish for over 50 years. He was the owner of Chalmette Motors in the 1970’s and then pursued his career with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office. He retired as a Captain after 35 years of dedicated service. Robert was a member of the Knights of Columbus Archbishop J. F. Rummel Council 5747. Robert was well loved and will be deeply missed by his family and those whose lives he touched. Howell Julian Merwin, a veteran who proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2017 at the age of 82. He was the beloved husband of 52 years to Marion Margaret Vallee Merwin. Loving father of Courtney Maria and proud grandfather of Madison Maria. He was the son of the late Emily Schallenberg and William “Bill” F. Merwin. Brother of the late Doris M. Mascari, Myrl M. Berger, Naomi A. Merwin, William “Willie” F. Merwin Jr. and Roy L. Merwin. He was the brother-in-law of the late Virgin Vallee and Richard F. Wallace, the late Shirley and George J. Vallee Jr., son-in-law of the late Albertine Gonzales Vallee and George J. Vallee Sr. He will be fondly remembered by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Howell was a native of New Orleans, LA and a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish, currently residing in Denham Springs, LA. He operated his business, Howell J. Merwin Sheet Metal Co. for over 35 years and was an employee of the St. Bernard Parish School Board from 1978 until his retirement in October 2005. He will forever be remembered as a loving and loyal husband, father and grandfather who loved his country and treasured his family. The family would like to thank the doctors and staff of North Oaks Hospital for their professional care and compassion when it was needed most.
