Detective Sergeant Henry John Maitre, Jr., a treasured family man and 30-year veteran of the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Department, entered into eternal rest on Friday, September 28, 2018, at the age of 83. After a long and fulfilled life “Big H,” as he was affectionately known, was undoubtedly greeted at heaven’s gate by his “One and Only Sunshine” Claire Meyer Maître, his deceased wife of 45 years. Big Henry was born in New Orleans on September 4, 1935, to the late Henry John Maitre, Sr. and the late Antoinette Forster Maitre. Henry graduated from Francis T. Nicholls High School and was later married to his high school sweetheart Claire May Meyer. Together they had five children: Cynthia Sandrock (Gary Sr.), Lisa Thiel (David), Suzanne Maitre, Henry J Maitre lll (Renee), and Mickey Maitre Sr. (Wendy). He was immensely proud of his large and loving family, which eventually grew to include nine grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren. Coach Henry was a longtime beloved coach and booster club president of Vista Playground, winning numerous championships throughout the years. He had a very strong work ethic that led to his many successful business ventures and lifelong career in law enforcement. Henry was currently working as a detective with the Criminal Investigations Bureau, as an investigator in the Sex Offender Compliance Unit. He also worked as a private investigator and owned his own firms in New Orleans and Houston. He was charming, smart, and determined almost to a fault. Henry was passionate about politics and sports. He was an avid traveler with his longtime companion Jeanine Dover. Henry had many friends and enjoyed telling stories of their adventures and times together, both good and bad. He had a collection of jokes, that could be over the top, and was known to gamble occasionally. If you were fortunate enough to know him and the Maitre Family, you know this is a man who lived with dignity, respect, and honor. He will be loved and missed tremendously by his family and friends. A public visitation was held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church, 2320 Paris Rd., Chalmette, LA, where a funeral mass followed.
