Elizabeth Grace Patty passed away on Monday, November 26, 2018 at the age of 55. She was the loving mother of Charles C. Patty, III and Courtney E. Patty. Beloved sister of Robert C. “Beaver” Ballam, Sue Nasca, Ann Ballam and Amanda Ballam. She was the cherished cousin of Margaret Kramer, who was always more like a sister than a cousin. Elizabeth was the former spouse of Charles C. Patty, Jr. She will be reunited in heaven with her loving parents, Cherington and Mary Ballam, and her Godchild and niece, Kimberly Rinkus. She also leaves behind many other dear relatives and friends. Elizabeth was the baby of the family, and was a devout and dedicated Catholic. She loved reading, especially her Bible, and above all, loved her family. She will always be remembered by those she leaves behind, as a mother, sister and dear friend who put everyone else’s needs above her own, and made sure those she loved were taken care of. Eloise Marilyn Held Rachuba, a retired homemaker; passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at home on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at the age of 89. Beloved wife of the late William Frank Rachuba. Daughter of the late Edward W. and Mildred Lee Held. Sister of the late Cyril, Alvin, Alvina, Miriam and Edward Held. Together, they started a family, and she became a homemaker. Eloise had a generous and loving heart. She was loved by everyone who knew her. She loved animals and opened her home to many in need. She was preceded in death by her dear parents, Robert Benjamin Thrash and Arah Gertrude Thrash; and her husband, Glenn F. Buzbee, Sr. Bitsy was the loving mother of David (Sharon), Dennis (Deborah) and Darren (Christie). Grandmother of Erin Buzbee Stevens (Aron), Alison Buzbee, Ian Buzbee and Landan Buzbee. Great-grandmother of Trent Nastasi. She was the stepmother of Glenn F. Buzbee, Jr. (Chris). Step-grandmother of Laurie Buzbee Borett (Stephen), Miles C. Buzbee (Jennifer) and Sarah Buzbee Berry. She was the step-great-grandmother of Olive Borrett, Wade and Banks Buzbee, and Atticus and Ansel Berry. She was the sister of Annette Bolton. Merrill “Mel” Stephen Cantin Jr. passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at the age of 82. Beloved husband of 60 years to Loretta L. Cantin. Father of Deborah Cantin Soileau (Dennis), Kenneth Merrill Cantin, Stephen Merrill Cantin (Sondra Harris Cantin), and the late Rebecca Anne Cantin. Grandfather of Sarah Louviere (Jeffrey), Amanda Billiot (Adam), Bradley Cantin, Ryder Chriss, and Tai Cantin. Great-grandfather of Ava Billiot, Allie Billiot, Anya Billiot, and Luke Louviere. He worked as a Wharfman at Tenneco/Mobil Oil at the Chalmette Refinery. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He loved to cheer on LSU and the Saints. Henry Andrew Ebel, Sr. passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 at the age of 88. He was the beloved husband of the late Dolores Ragas Ebel. Brother of Juliet Mitchell (the late Billy), Kathryn Smith and the late Edward Ebel, Jr. (the late Eleanor). Proud grandfather of Brian, Christopher, Stephen, Nicole, Erica, Jeanne, Michael Jr., Bryan II, Benjamin, Cassidy, Gabrielle, Stephanie and Andrew. Great grandfather of Victoria, Lily, Lorelei, Lucy, Alexis, Abigail, Logan, Gabe, Aiden, Blaise, Emma, Brendon, Riley, Jacob, and Jackson. He is also survived and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Henry was born in New Orleans, LA and was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish before settling in Mandeville, LA following hurricane Katrina. Henry was always active in his community, including serving as a Scout Master for the Boy Scouts for 10 years, coaching for Carolyn Park in St. Bernard for 17 years, and a proud member of the United Way and Knights of Columbus. He was an active parishioner and Eucharistic Minister of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish in St. Bernard, Our Lady of the Lake in Mandeville, LA; and past active member of Toast Master’s giving him the gift to speak in front of both small and large crowds. He will always be remembered for his dedication to his family, his friends and his community, his laughter, and spoiling the grandchildren. He was a wonderful example of what it means to care for others and will be deeply missed by us all. Edward Michael Gros, Jr., born on March 3, 1961, passed away on December 2, 2018 in Slidell, Louisiana after a long illness at the age of 57. He is sadly missed by his wife Celeste, his son Edward Michael III, his mother Carmela Talamo Gros, and his sisters Donna Gros Anderson (David) and Debra Gros Zimmer (Keith). Cynthia Louise Rainey passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 9, 2018 surrounded by loved ones after a long, courageous battle with cancer at the age of 71. She was born in New Orleans and a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish. Beloved companion of Henry “Hank” Brown of over 25 years. She was preceded in death by her father, Douglas Joseph Rainey, and survived by her mother, Mary Louise Watson Rainey. Loving sister of Douglas Joseph Rainey, Jr (Julie Bonnette). Devoted mother to Melissa Roberts Tavlin (Don), Angelle Roberts Rodriguez (Ronnie), Kellie Jude Roberts and the late Casey Alan Roberts. She adored her 9 grandchildren, Brandon Achary, Brooke Rodriguez, Danielle Rodriguez, Alexandra Roberts (Danielle Martin), Kelsey Bergeron, Nathan Roach, Madelyn Tavlin, Julia Tavlin and Parker Beaudean and four great grandchildren. She also cherished her two nieces, Jessica Rainey Alphonso (Lynn) and Abigayle Rainey. She graduated from Chalmette High School and had many life-long friends that cared deeply for her. She was originally a beautician by trade and retired from Conklin Metal Industries as inside sales/administrative assistant. Cynthia was a remarkable cook and never used a recipe. She enjoyed making delicious meals for everyone. Her famous dishes will be made for generations to come. Her love of hot tea every morning has been passed down to her children and grandchildren. Her collection of teapots will be cherished forever. She was a selfless person who always put others first. She dedicated her entire life to helping and taking care of others. Edward J. Rusich, Jr., passed away on November 30, 2018 at the age of 77. EJ was born in New Orleans, and raised in Arabi, LA. He was the son of the late Edward, Sr. and Juanita Cortes Rusich. He attended Holy Cross High School and graduated from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He worked for many years at the Ben Franklin Store in Belle Chase, LA. He then started the Edward Rusich Seafood Brokerage Co. and was still actively in business until his death. EJ is survived by his devoted siblings, Donna Rusich Phister (Allin), Nita Rusich Meins (Dale), and Roland Cortes Rusich, as well as by many nieces and nephews. Raymond Sanchez, Jr.
Raymond Sanchez, Jr., affectionately known as “Junior;” began his journey on August 6, 1928 and peacefully passed away at Heritage Manor of Mandeville surrounded by loved ones on December 3, 2018 at the age of 90. He was the eldest son of the late Raymond Sr. and Lucetta Green Sanchez. He was a dependable and loving family man. He was a lifelong resident of Violet. He attended Violet Consolidated School leaving only to begin working to help his family earn money. He was an avid reader and could debate with you on any subject. His dedication to excellence and service were shown as he served his country during two tours of duty in the US Army. He was united in holy matrimony to the late Mary Lee Bannister Sanchez and to this union four children were born: Ramona Moore (David), Ricardo Sanchez, Tyrone Sanchez (Cassandra), and Battina Williams. He worked as a laborer for the Archdiocese of New Orleans for over 40 years, retiring from St. Clement of Rome Church in Metairie, LA in July of 1998. A few of Junior’s favorite past times were walking to visit with his sisters, mowing lawns in the community, and watching the Violet Bulldogs play baseball. He also enjoyed driving sports cars. He accepted Christ as his Savior at the New Birth Ministries. Junior was the brother of: Mary “Noogie” Fernandez, the late Freddie Sanchez Sr., Doretha Blaise, Ethel Santiago, Roland Sanchez Sr., and Diana Bannister. He was the brother in law of: Yvonne Sanchez, Frank Joseph and Rita B. Williams. He cherished the role of Paw Paw to: Joseph Bailey III, Jerrard Bailey (Tene), Candice Tolbert (Chris), Steven Moore, Terrione Brock, Timothy Brock (Denean), Damena McCoy (Elliott), and Desiree’ Williams. and. He was a Great Grand Paw to: Dante Tolbert, Christopher Tolbert Jr., Jerrell Verrette, Brandon Vicknair, Timothy Jr. and Trinity Brock, Kitrix Maddox Jr., Gabrielle Moncure, Gabriel Moncure, and David McCoy. He also enjoyed the company of his Devoted Friends: Rena Jones, Jay Williams, Joe & Vera Hills. He adored his Devoted Neighbors: Parnell Payne Sr., J.C. Randall Neal “Randy” Davidson
Randall Neal “Randy” Davidson went home to see his Savior on December 14, 2018 after battling a chronic illness at the age of 70. Randy was the son of Montez Janet (Thames) Davidson and the late Rufus Neal “R.N.” Davidson. He was born August 18, 1948 in Shreveport, Louisiana. He graduated from Chalmette High School and then earned his Baccalaureate at Louisiana State University where he also played basketball. Randy is survived by his three sons, Robert (Cori) and Matthew (Rachel) from his late wife Judith Lynn Hill Davidson, and Christopher from his wife Sally Jeter McCreight Davidson, along with seven grandchildren, Benjamin Seth, Elam Neal, Gracelyn Judith, Rogan James, Zoe Elena, Audrey Elizabeth, and Hadleigh Lynn. He is also survived by his mother Montez Davidson, sister Derryle Barrow (Harold), brother Dr. Ricky Davidson (Annette), and his nieces and nephew. Randy was a skillful hunter and athlete. He was a construction expert and talented negotiator, building a business legacy throughout Louisiana as the kind of man with whom people desired to do business. What Randy was most passionate about was building other people’s lives. He used his influence to help countless others grow in their faith and become better individuals. His legacy stretches much further than we will know in this life and will continue long after his passing. He will be dearly missed. Harry Joseph Mills passed away peacefully on December 11, 2018 at the age of 88. Beloved husband of the late Shirley Neubauer Mills for 68 years. Loving father of the late James Mills (Dona), Roland Mills (Nancy), the late Michael Mills (Cindy), the late Harry Mills, Jr., Cathy Guillot (Eno), and Jeffery Mills (Sherri). Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Mills, he is also survived by his brother Gerald Mills (Christine) and preceded in death by his sister Earline. He has 14 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family who will miss him dearly. Harry loved to fish and could fix almost anything. Herlinda Herrera Morales died at the early hours of December 11, 2018 at her home in New Orleans, LA after a short illness at the age of 91. Mrs. Morales was born on April 12, 1927 in Tegucigalpa, Honduras to Manuel Herrera and Angelica de Herrera. She married Angel Morales in 1948, and was a homemaker. Together, they raised 3 sons. The family moved to New York in 1967 and then to New Orleans in the middle of the 1970’s where she resided till the end of her life. Her family paid this tribute to her: “Herlinda, known to her family as Estela; was a loving wife, the best mother and a great grandmother and will be sorely missed”. She is survived by her husband and three sons, Angelo Humberto, Eddie Franz and Eric Wilmore. Mrs. Patricia ‘Patti’ Susan Dewailly Satterlee passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 11, 2018 following a long battle with cancer at the age of 67. She was born in New Orleans, LA, attended Archbishop Chapelle High School and The University of New Orleans earning a B.S. and M.S. in Education, and was active in the Business and Professional Women’s Club and volunteered in various committees in St. Bernard Parish. She had a fulfilling 35 year career as a Social Studies and History teacher for the St. Bernard Parish School Board and the Louisiana Department of Education. She was a voracious reader and an amazing cook. She was a kind and gracious person who loved caring for those around her. Most importantly, she was loving and devoted to her family. Patricia is preceded in death by her father, Edmund Louis Dewailly, Sr., and her sister, Vicki Dewailly Abernethy. She is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Gerard Sheldon Satterlee, Jr.; her mother, Adeline Bordelon Dewailly; her daughters, Melanie Becnel Broga (Jonathan), Amy Satterlee Trahan (Joseph), and Windy Satterlee Rachal (Christopher); her grandchildren, Ellery, Haley and Avery Broga; Sophia and Sydney Trahan; and Nathan and Eleanor Rachal. She is also survived by her brother, Edmund Louis Dewailly, Jr. and her sister Terri Dewailly Mogharrebi (Farhad); nephews Cole Mogharrebi, Mark Rodney Smith, Jr. (Jen Tomchak), Stephen Michael Smith (Elise), and their children ; Ethan and Wesley Smith; and Audrey and Vivienne Smith. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some way throughout her life. Gayle was born on November 30, 1948 at Touro Infirmary in New Orleans, LA. She was raised in the Irish Channel and was a longtime resident of Arabi, LA. Daughter of the late Louis W. Mohren and Helen Faccion. She was the cherished wife of 51 years to Lonnie A. Simoneaux. Loving mother of Sharon (Charles) Sauerwin and Michele Simoneaux. Proud grandmother of Charles III and Nicholas Sauerwin. Sister of Darlene Stewart, Michael, Louis Jr., James Lucas and the late Mark Lucas. She is also survived and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. She was well loved and affectionately known for her good nature and generous heart. She will be forever remembered as a loving and loyal wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, who treasured her family and friends. Glenn Christopher Viau
Deacon Glenn Christopher Viau, of Westlake, LA, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 28, 2018 at the age of 64. Deacon Viau was born January 17, 1954 in New Orleans, LA, where he was a native and a long time educator. Deacon Viau began his educational ministry in 1977 in the Archdiocese of New Orleans, serving for 14 years, first as a teacher and assistant principal at St. James Major High School, and then as principal of St. Louise de Marillac School, where he met the love of his life, Rosalie Viau. He served on the administrative staff at St. Louis Catholic High School from 1991 through 2001, and again from 2002 through 2007, serving as Academic Assistant Principal (1991-1998), Campus Minister (1998-2001), and Academic Administrator (2002-2007). While at St. Louis, Deacon Viau also taught Theology, English, Social Studies, and Journalism. He also served as interim principal at Our Lady Immaculate Catholic School in Jennings during the 2001-2002 school year, and most recently, at St. Louis Catholic High School for the 2017-18 school year. Deacon Viau is a 1977 graduate of Loyola University in New Orleans, where he earned a B.S. in Secondary Education. He has also earned two graduate degrees from Loyola, an M. Ed. in Secondary Education and an M.P.S. in Pastoral Studies. In 2004, he completed the Spiritual Directors program offered by the Diocese of Lake Charles, and served as a supervisor in the program. He has served three terms as Chairperson of the Council of Deacons, and is currently the Assistant to the Vicar for Clergy. Deacon Viau taught two Holy Cross theology courses offered through the Diocese of Lake Charles, Morality and Adolescent Faith Development. He served on the teaching staff for the most recent Diaconate Formation Program for the Diocese of Lake Charles, teaching New Testament Letters and Gospels to deacon candidates. He has also taught Introduction to Catholicism and The Catholic Novel for the Center for Catholic Studies. He was currently teaching a dual enrollment course, Religion 201, at St. Louis Catholic High School through McNeese State University. Deacon Viau also enjoyed volunteering back to his community through the Covenant House, where he served as an educational tutor, for Hunger Walk-Bread for the World, Spiritual director for the Acts Community and with many other organizations. Deacon Viau lived by Micah 6:8 “You have been told, O mortal, what is good, and what the Lord requires of you: Only to do justice and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God.” Deacon Viau was known for his great memory, recalling facts, practical level-headed advice and willingness to do anything for his family and friends and those in need. He was a Spiritual director, known for his wisdom and guidance. He loved sports for entertainment and the knowledge of facts. His many interests included books and literature, the theater, opera, and science fiction. He loved his Acts Community family, but his true passions in life were for God and his family, especially his grandchildren and yorkie Lucy. Deacon Viau was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Doris Viau; and his in-laws, John and Teresa Sparacio. He is survived by his wife of twenty-seven years, Rosalie Sparacio Viau of Westlake, LA; daughter, Christina “Tina” Burleigh and husband Phillip, also of Westlake, LA; sister, Deborah Viau Valiente and husband Joseph; nephew, Stephen Valiente; niece, Kristen V. Romig and husband Neil; grandchildren, Brooks, Brennum, and Brecken Burleigh; and his beloved granddoggie, Lucy. Flowers are appreciated, or donations can be made in Deacon Viau’s name to St. Louis High School, 1620 Bank Street, Lake Charles, LA 70601, Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 221 Aqua Drive, Lake Charles, LA 70605, Immaculate Conception Catholic School, 1536 Ryan Street, Lake Charles, LA 70601, or to Camp Karol Catholic Youth Camp and Retreat, 2151 Sam Houston Jones Parkway, Lake Charles, LA 70611. His funeral service was held on Monday, December 3, 2018 at Our Lady of Queen of Heaven Catholic Church. Bishop Glen John Provost officiated, along with numerous other co-celebrants. Burial followed in New Bethany Cemetery at the St. Charles Retreat Center in Moss Bluff, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation will be at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church on Sunday, December 2, 2018 with a Scripture Service and rosary. During the church Mass, visitation moved to the church student center. Beverly Mayer Westcott
Beverly Mayer Westcott passed away on Friday, December 14, 2018 in Humble, TX at the age of 84. She was born on October 5, 1934 in New Orleans, LA to the late Benedict Mayer and Mathilde Kinler Mayer. Beverly was married to her beloved husband, the late George Westcott Jr., for 47 years. She was the loving mother of George Westcott III, Susan Seeger (Scott) and Leslie W. Amato (John). She was the proud grandmother of 6 and great-grandmother of 9. Beverly was the sister of Anna Grace Bertin, the late Benedict Mayer, Mathilde Heffere, Edna Williamson, Marion Hartman, and Burgie Lamkin. Beverly worked as a secretary for St. Bernard Parish Schools, and after moving to Covington, she worked for St. Tammany Parish Schools. She worked in the school systems for over 20 years. After retirement, she loved to dedicate her time as a volunteer at St. Tammany Hospital. She enjoyed traveling to the Mississippi gulf coast enjoying her time at casinos with friends. She loved New Orleans, especially the French Quarter. She had a special place in her heart for St. Louis Cathedral, where she attended elementary school. Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral Mass at St. Jane de Chantal Catholic Church, 72040 Maple St., Abita Springs, LA 70420 on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 12 Noon with visitation from 10:30 AM until Mass time. Louis Philip Diaz, Jr.
It is with great sadness that the family of Louis Philip Diaz, Jr. announces his passing on December 18, 2018 at the age of 73. Louis was born on August 14, 1945 in Biloxi, MS, and was raised in Violet, LA. He was the beloved husband of Lola Adams Diaz. Father of Louis P. Diaz III (Lisa), Tyonia Schick (John), Todd M. Diaz, Sr. (Roxanne), Tristan P. Diaz, Sr. (Julie), and Trent Diaz (April). Stepfather of Ronnie Adams, Josh Adams (Natalie), Ramey Adams (Courtney), and Kane Adams (Shelby). Son-in-law of Ralph Payne, Sr. (Paw) and Josie Payne (Maw). Grandfather of 25 and Great-grandfather of 15. He was preceded in death by his Father, Louis Diaz Sr., Mother, Anna Diaz and Brother, Gerald J. Diaz. Louis was a graduate of Holy Cross High School “Class of 1963” and attended Holy Cross College. He then worked for Exxon Mobil as a Machinist and Safety Specialist for over 30 years, enjoyed playing sports, the outdoors and loved spending time with family and friends. He was also a Louisiana sports enthusiast and was an avid Saint’s and Tiger’s fan. He was a resident of St. Bernard Parish for over 70 years, annuitant of Exxon Mobil and past owner of Diaz Food Store. Louis was also a proud member of the Old Violet Gang, Clear Run Creek Hunting Club, Gatien Livaudais Memorial Hunting Club and was a past Duke of the Our Lady of Lourdes Carnival Ball, in Violet. A visitation for family and friends was held on Friday, December 21, 2018 at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue Street, in Chalmette. A Funeral Mass followed in his honor afterward.
