Michael Kevin McCarthy, a lifelong resident of Kenner, LA passed away on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at the age of 61. He retired from Industrial Instrument Works after 35 years of service. Michael dedicated his life to coaching youth sports for the City of Kenner and St. Bernard Recreation Departments. He officiated football, basketball and baseball for playgrounds, Junior High and High Schools for many years. Michael also had a passion for Golf, NASCAR, Notre Dame Football and The Boston Red Sox. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Denise Riviere McCarthy. Father of Patrick McCarthy and Melissa McCarthy Forvendel (Brandon). Grandfather of Anthony McCarthy, Jeremy and Jayden Forvendel. Son of Diane Guillot McCarthy and the late Cyril F. McCarthy, III. Louise “Mee-Mee” Prendergast passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the age of 87. She was the daughter of the late Alma and Murphy Compton, Sr. Loving mother of Linda Kieff, and the late Mike Lasure and C. J. Calamari, Jr. Grandmother of Angela Lange (Marty), Gina LeBlanc (Steve), Charlie McLoughlin, Ricky Guerra, Jr. (Natasha), Kerry Guerra, Sr., Colby Guerra, Sr. (Nicole), and James Kieff. Sister of Alma Gipson (Bill) and the late Lois Meyers (Arthur), Murphy Compton, Jr. (Mary), and Peggy Compton. Catherine Phillipello Weiss passed away on Tuesday January 15, 2019 at the age of 88. She was born April 19, 1930, in New Orleans, LA, and was a resident of St. Bernard Parish for the past 57 years. Surviving relatives include her nieces and nephews: Claudette (Cliff) Reuther, Frank (Paula) Arsaga, Phillip (Suzanne) Phillippello, Jr., Pam (Buddy) Cowart, Tammy (Reza) Ajalli and Ralph Carroll. Catherine was the daughter of the late Ida Montalbano and Joseph Phillipello of New Orleans, LA. She was preceded in death by her husband Stanley Weiss; sister Mary Arsaga; brother Phillip Phillippello, Sr.; sister Ida Carroll; and nephew Michael Phillippello. Catherine was retired from the American Can Company. She enjoyed traveling, crocheting, and her years in carnival clubs Juno, Daughter’s of Eve, and Shangri-La. In her later years, her joy was spending time with her family and seeing her family grow with the birth of her great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews where-in she became Nanny Cat. Rita Foret Cangelosi passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 at the age of 85. She was the beloved daughter of the late Percy Foret and Mabel LaRosa. Leonard Walter Frazier
Leonard Walter Frazier passed away Wednesday, January 23, 2019, following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of 59. Lenny was a native of New Orleans and a longtime resident of Chalmette. He is survived by his beloved wife of thirty-six years, Sharon Faust Frazier, and his three sons; Lenny (Lauren), Lance (Mollie), and Cory. He was a loving grandfather to Victoria, Jean, Brynn, Lenny, Sadie, Jude, Lauralye, Cory, and Beau. He is also survived by his siblings; Leslie Thibodeaux (Buzzy), Freddy Frazier (Amy), and Scott Frazier (Sue) as well as many in-laws, nieces, and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Patricia Frazier and his sisters, Beth Frazier and Cindy Bradley (Alan). Lenny graduated from Bonnabel High School, where he lettered in baseball before continuing his career at Delgado Community College and the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) where he earned his degree in Marketing in 1982. Following graduation, he served on the coaching staff at USL under Coach Mel Didier. Lenny worked at Kentwood Springs before joining the Domino Sugar family, serving as a National Accounts Manager until his death. Lenny treasured his Catholic faith and was a devoted member of Group 16 at Manresa House of Retreats for thirty years. His big smile, positive attitude, and caring personality served as a source of friendship and comfort for all who knew him. The family wishes to thank Lenny’s many friends, teammates, co-workers, and relatives for their love and support over the past year. Catherine Bush George passed away on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at the age of 81. She was born in New Orleans, LA on June 5, 1937 to the late Oliver Bush, Sr. and the late Helen Cager Bush. Catherine Bush George is survived by her three sons: Lawrence, Sr. “Bryan” (Genique) of New Orleans, Louisiana; Theron (Florence) of Bozrah, Connecticut; Christopher (Jeannie) of Houston, Texas; twelve grandchildren, one great grandchild, a host of nieces and nephews. Catherine leaves her three sisters to cherish her loving memories: Helen B. McMiller, Lorraine B. Hudson, Loretta B. Singleton (Norman, Jr.) and her two brothers: Earl (Shirley) and Leon Bush. Catherine is preceded in death by her late Husband of 56 years (Lawrence C. George), by her parents (Oliver and Helen Bush), her brothers (Oliver Jr., Leonard Sr., Donald and Edwin Bush) and her sisters (Ellen Franklin, Gayle Prevost and Venola Spurlock). Catherine received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1959. She graduated from Joseph Samuel Clark High School in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1954. She married Lawrence at Battle Ground Baptist Church in Fazendeville (Chalmette), Louisiana on September 5, 1959. Shortly after marriage, the young couple moved to St. Louis while Lawrence pursued his Masters Degree at St. Louis University. While working on his dissertation he received a job with the U.S. Bureau of Mines in the Metallurgical Research Center as a chemist in Rolla, MO. Life for that small college town was never the same as their contributions were interwoven into the fabric of the community for the next 60 years. Catherine was active in the community from the moment she arrived in Rolla. Lawrence and Catherine attended Elkins Methodist Church where they were active members. Catherine was a member of the governing board and taught Sunday School until 1981. Catherine and Lawrence joined Christ Church Episcopal that same year. She was a member of the Episcopal Church Women, was the chairperson of the Open Door Group that provided food to the needy, she was a delegate to the Missouri Diocese Convention where she met Bishop Desmond Tu Tu. She participated in many organizations: member of the Board of Directors for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, volunteered at the Russell House (for battered women), participated in the INROADS program at the University of Missouri Rolla as the St Louis Liaison mentoring scholarship recipients, was an active member of the Optimist Club for Years (and was the Optimist of the Year) and was a founding member of the Rolla chapter of the NAACP and received the “Yes I Can Award” for her many contributions. Queen Cat was the ultra Mother of The Epsilon Psi Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity where she nurtured untold thousands of Alpha brothers and their families and friends, members of the University and Rolla communities, et al. Her famous homemade New Orleans style gumbo and iced tea pleasured palates and filled the stomachs of many for over 60 years. In recognition of those contributions, the Epsilon Psi brothers gave Lawrence and Catherine a two-week trip to West Africa where they visited Senegal, the Gambia and Mali (and the legendary city of Timbuktu) in 2001. In 2009, Catherine descended onto Washington DC to observe the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama with her son Christopher and her daughter-in-law Jeannie. Temperatures right below freezing wouldn’t stop this 71 year old as she walked the mall among approximately 2 million onlookers. She was an unstoppable force that will be greatly missed. A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 26, 2018 at Battle Ground Baptist Church, 2241 Flood Street, New Orleans, LA 70117. Rev. Eric Dorsey was the officiant.
Roland J. Grob, Sr.
Roland J. Grob, Sr. went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the age of 92. He was a faithful member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor and Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Roland very proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army. He was a hard-working architect for many years, and a former resident of St. Bernard Parish. He was also a very loving and dedicated husband, father, brother and Poppa. He is already so deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Roland leaves behind his sweetheart of almost 60 years, Elaine Entremont Grob; daughter Geralyn “Geri” Davis (Sporty); son Roland Grob, Jr. (Johannie “Joey”); sister Shirley Capone; brother Earl Joseph “EJ” Grob Jr; grandchildren Mandy Barlow (Brandon), Olivia Davis, Brett Davis, Ryan Grob, Brock Davis; two great-grandsons Blake and Brayden Barlow; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Clifton Neal Juan
Clifton Neal Juan peacefully departed this life on January 22, 2019, reuniting with his beloved parents, Clifton Leo Juan and Madeline Ventriello Juan, who preceded him. Clif had a lifelong love of music and was a member of the Tiger Band at Holy Cross High School, graduating in 1971. He then attended Southeastern Louisiana University where he was a member of the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia national music fraternity and graduated in 1975. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Navy. Clif was born and raised in Arabi, LA and relocated to Metairie following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. He had a love of reading and learning, which continued throughout his life, and during his time in Metairie was a frequent visitor to the East Bank Regional Library. Clif selflessly cared for his aging mother during her last years, and will be remembered as a devoted son and brother. If there is one thing that could truly describe Clif, it is that he was a good, kind and considerate man, who never spoke an unkind word to or about anyone, and he will be sorely missed. Clif is survived by his brother, Stephen C. Juan who will miss him most of all, as well as his mother’s two remaining siblings, Mary Ann Ventriello and Theresa Wolfson of New York. He is also survived by numerous cousins in Louisiana, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Arizona. His family will be forever grateful to the staff of the East Jefferson Hospital Intensive Care Unit and the St Joseph Hospice at Carpenter House for the care, kindness and consideration shown to Clif. Russell Armand Mayeur passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2019, at home surrounded by his family at the age of 91. He was born on September 30, 1927. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Flick Mayeur & Edward Frank Mayeur, his brothers, Edward, Arthur, Joseph, Robert & Raymond Mayeur. Survived by his beloved wife, Eloise Kelly Mayeur for the past 74 years. Father of Russell A. Mayeur, Jr. (Judy, deceased), Ellen Mayeur McCubbin (Terry), Eloise Mayeur Carboni (Lou), Kelly Mayeur Feraud (Darryl), and Kerry Edward Mayeur (Heather). Grandfather of 14, Great-grandfather of 19 and Great-great-grandfather of 1. He attended Our Lady Star of the Sea Grammar School & Warren Easton High School. He was a charter member of the Krewe of Pegasus and the Krewe of Caesar serving both organizations as President & Officer. His Community Service includes: St. Bernard Kiwanis Club – 20 years & Past President. He was awarded twice the Outstanding Member of the organization. Russell was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for 40 years and the recipient of the highest award that a leader can receive called the Silver Beaver. Scout Master of Troop 3 (1956-58); Troop 276 (1974-76); Boy Scout District Commissioner, Crescent District, and Muskhogea District. He was President of the Parents Club of Annunciation Grammar School and National member, Louisiana Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. He was a Volunteer at the 122nd Jackson Barracks Military Museum. His Military Schools included: Merchant Marine Academy, U.S. Army Officer Training Course, The Air Defense Basic & Advance Course, Army Transportation Course, Army Engineer & Quartermaster Courses and U.S. Army Command & General Staff College. His awards & decorations include: U.S. Army Meritorious Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Atlantic and Mediterranean War Zone, U.S. Army Commendation Medal with Device, National Reference Medal and Louisiana Emergency Service Medal. He served in the VFW Post 2880 as commander for 5 years followed by 2 years as the post Quarter Master retiring in 2005. During the time prior to his death, he was a member of American Legion Post 377 and served for 2 years as the 2nd Vice Commander. Also, he served as President of Jackson Barracks Officers Club 1963-64, President of the LA National Guard Association of Louisiana 1980-81. President of the Washington Artillery Veterans Association for 3 terms. George Arthur Tullos, Sr.
George Arthur Tullos, Sr. passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday January 27, 2019 at the age of 89. His final days were spent surrounded by his loving family and wife of 37 years, Thelma Estelle Clements Tullos. George is the father of George Arthur Tullos Jr, Jeff Lee Tullos, Peggy Tullos Esposito, Jason Curtis Tullos, and Amanda Lyn Tullos Betts. He is preceded in death by Robert Tullos Sr and Rachel Lynn Tullos. George is the son of the late Robert Matalvyn Tullos and the late Gertrude Elizabeth Hamlin Tullos Geis. He is the brother of Roba Dwain Tullos, Bobbie Jean Harvill-Wooldridge , Billy Doyal Tullos, and Freelon Dwight Tullos. George leaves behind a legacy of 12 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. George was born on June 1, 1929 in Trinity, TX. Following his U.S. Army service he became a New Orleans resident where he owned Stephens Hardware, and worked for N.O.P.S.I. While later living in St. Bernard he worked for Violet Dock Port, Boland Marine, and was a shrimper and avid fisherman of the waterways in South Eastern Louisiana. He further went on to establish roots on a farm in Picayune, MS, and then operated a successful poultry farm in Columbia, MS. George retired late in life at his water front property in Springfield, LA. He enjoyed his entire life by spending time with his wife and family, and farming. George will always be remembered for his love of boxing, football, chewing Red Man tobacco, his hard work, his strength, his perseverance, his ability to overcome challenges, and his passion for fishing. Curtis Cox, Jr.
Curtis Cox, Jr., died from lung cancer peacefully at his home on Monday, January 21, 2019 at the age of 87. He is preceded in death by his parents, Alma and Curtis, Sr; by his wife of 62 years, Patsy; and his son Grant (Marlena). He is survived by his brother Garvin (Velvye), his children Deborah Barbe (Donald), Victoria Moffett (Bobby), Brett Cox, Susan Hoxie (Joel), Rebecca Blache, and Danah Cox; 16 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. And a true Georgia Peach, Charlotte Dufour. Curtis grew up on St. Roch Park in New Orleans, then moved with his growing family to St. Bernard in the 1950’s, living there for over 50 years. He enjoyed life as a Chalmatian, participating in the Little Theatre and taking advantage of the educational offerings available, such as the Nunez History Lecture Series. After Katrina, he reluctantly moved to Slidell. He earned degrees at LSU and Tulane University. The majority of his career was in N.O. Public Schools, teaching English at Colton Jr. High, where he also wrote, produced, and directed school plays. Curtis later worked as a teacher advocate and Title One Video Production Coordinator. Additionally, he taught at West Georgia State College in the early 70’s. After retirement, he continued his videography work with his company, CoxVid, producing and often providing the narration for commercials for local companies and political campaigns. Curtis enjoyed cooking various ethnic foods, drinking bourbon, smoking cigars, fly-fishing and solving cryptic and crossword puzzles. He also tagged along with his brother, Garvin, as a member of the DownTown Irish Club. Together they donned their kilts to attend many functions, including walking in the St Patrick’s Day parade. Sorry, ladies, last year was Curtis’ final march through the French Quarter...you missed him! Jane Von Behren Dembrun passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2019 at the age of 86. She was the devoted wife of the late Joseph S. Dembrun, Sr. Loving mother of Joseph Dembrun, Jr. (Sharon), Bryan Dembrun (Donna), Michael Dembrun, Christopher Dembrun, and Patrick Dembrun (Joni). Grandmother of Joseph Dembrun, III, Kimberly Dupree, Stacey Mann, Matthew Dembrun, Erin Strain, Tara Andrus, Melissa Sciavicco, Christopher Dembrun, Jr., Shawn Dembrun, Jared Dembrun, and Chase Dembrun. She was the proud great-grandmother of 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emily Fried Von Behren and August E. Von Behren, and by her brother, August E. Von Behren, Jr. (Marie). She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends. Irma Katherine Gause Gagliano passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019 at the age of 92. Beloved wife of the late Blaise Gagliano Sr. Loving mother of Blaise Gagliano Jr. (Linda). Daughter of the late Morris Joseph and Florence Kelly Gause. Sister of the late Morris Gause Jr., Frank Gause, Lester Gause, Mildred Jeanfreau, Alma Cureau, Ruth McIntee and Hazel Gause. Proud grandmother of Blaise Shannon Gagliano and Shawn Paul Gagliano. Great grandmother of Destiny Ann, Kaos Blaise, Dominic Paul, Marinda Marie Tufaro. Great great grandmother of Phillip Roy Leger and Logan Blaise Leger, Harper Hardy and Hayes Hardy. Also survived and fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. Irma was born on September 8, 1926 in New Orleans, LA and was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish before settling in Covington, LA. She will be forever remembered and deeply missed by her family, friends and all of those whose lives she touched. Mary Ethel Arnold Gardner
Mary Ethel Arnold Gardner passed away in her home in Slidell on January 30, 2019 at age
78. She was the beloved wife of the late Huey Lee Gardner, Sr. with whom she shared 56 years of marriage. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Ann Hollis (Russell) and son Huey Lee Gardner, Jr. (Mary); five grandchildren, Crystal Hollis, Charles Hollis, Sean Hollis, Matthew Gardner and Andrew Gardner; one great-grandchild, Katherine Rose Hite; and her brother, David Lynn Arnold. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mattie Stafford Arnold and Charles David Arnold, Jr., and her brothers, Charles E. Arnold and Henry S. Arnold. Mary was born at home in New Orleans on April 24, 1940 and resided in St. Bernard Parish from 1946 – 2005. She was a proud graduate of the Charity Hospital School of Nursing and she worked as a Registered Nurse for nearly 30 years at several hospitals, most notably Charity Hospital in New Orleans. Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation to be held at St. Bernard Memorial Funeral Home, 701 W. Virtue Street, in Chalmette, on Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a service to be held in her honor at 1 p.m. She will be laid to rest in Restlawn Cemetery, in Avondale.
Roland James Grob, Sr.
Roland went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the age of
92. He was a faithful member of Our Lady of Prompt Succor and Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Roland very proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Army. He was a hard-working architect for many years. Roland was a very loving and dedicated husband, father, brother, and Poppa. He is already so deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Roland leaves behind his sweetheart of almost 60 years, Elaine Entremont Grob; daughter, Geralyn “Geri” Davis and husband Sporty; son, Roland Grob Jr and wife Johannie “Joey”; sister, Shirley Capone; brother, Earl Joseph “EJ” Grob Jr; grandchildren, Mandy Barlow and husband Brandon, Olivia Davis, Brett Davis, Ryan Grob, and Brock Davis; 2 great grandsons, Blake and Brayden Barlow; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death are his parents, Leah Miller Grob and Earl Joseph Grob Sr; and sisters, Evelyn Culotta and Earline Grob. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Reggie Holloway, Crystal Jackson, Ellie and Mark Guillory, as well as North Oaks Hospice for their special care and friendship. Raymond LaFrance
Raymond LaFrance earned his wings on Thursday, January 24, 2019 at the age of 86. He was husband of the late Lorraine Gerdes LaFrance and the devoted life partner of Lisa Naquin for 15 years. Loving father of Debbie Dalon, Ray LaFrance (Renee), Cynthia L. Bryant (Joe), Gail Guerra, Rhonda LaFrance (Johnny) and the late Troy LaFrance. Son of the late Remy and Odelia LaFrance. Proud grandfather of 19 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 10 great great grandchildren. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters. Raymond was born the last of thirteen children on June 30, 1932 in New Orleans, LA. He was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish before settling in Picayune, MS. Raymond was a dedicated tugboat captain and retired after many years of service. He wasn’t just our dad, he was our best friend. His daily calls just to ask about our day will be deeply missed. He loved tell us about his trips to the casino with Lisa and how she won and they would eat the buffet. It was the simple things that he liked most. Robert “Bob” Lapeyrouse passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at the age of 87. He was the beloved husband of the late Margaret Grunik Lapeyrouse. Son of the late Russell and Valerie Springer Lapeyrouse. Brother of Judy Benandi (A.J.) and the late Jeanette Laudun (Ralph) and Emile Lapeyrouse (Nathalie). Uncle of Lisa Reaney, Angie Pogue, John Laudun, Kim Cure, Russell Lapeyrouse and Emile Lapeyrouse Jr. He is also survived and fondly remembered by many relatives and dear friends. Bob was born in New Orleans, LA and was a longtime resident of St. Bernard Parish where he enjoyed a long career as a produce manager. He lived a quiet life, finding pleasure in the details of everyday life. He was well loved and will be deeply missed by his family and by all those whose lives he touched.
