David A. Paysse, Sr. was born on October 15, 1942, and he passed away peacefully on January 2, 2020 at the age of 77. David is survived by his loving wife, Fay Fiegel Paysse, and by his children, Jennifer Paysse Kondracki (Mick), Nicole Paysse Cangelosi (Ricky), David Paysse, Jr., John Paysse, and Scott Dillman. David is also survived by 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar Paysse, Sr. and Pauline Tresch Paysse, and his brothers, Oscar Paysse, Jr., Rene Paysse and Alton Giorgio. David is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews. David is a graduate of Jesuit High School and received an undergraduate degree and Juris Doctor degree from Tulane University. His practice was initially in Maritime Law. David was the Parish Attorney for St. Bernard Parish for 15 years until his retirement in 2009. David served in the United States Army, was a Vietnam Veteran, and a recipient of the Bronze Star. He was a member of the American Legion Post 175 and the Knights of Columbus Council 4472. David was well-known for his special seafood corn chowder, referred to as “Paw-Paw’s white soup” by his grandchildren. He enjoyed hosting crawfish, shrimp and crab boils for family and friends for many years and was famous for inspecting the trays for any seafood left behind. David’s first love was for his family and his faith, and his second love was spending time at his home in Pass Christian, Mississippi. He also had a special devotion to Padre Pio and he loved sharing this with others. The family would like to thank Pandora Weaver and the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Home for their love and support. James Anthony “Cook” Perez, Sr. was unexpectedly called to be with our Heavenly Father on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at his home in Bedico, LA, at the age of 60. Jimmy was born in Los Angeles, CA, but was raised and lived in Violet/St. Bernard until 2005. He moved to Bedico, LA, on the Northshore after Hurricane Katrina. Jimmy took great pride in his work as a dental technician. He was an avid Saints/LSU fan and loved hashing over the games. He loved a good game of golf and made his first “hole in one” last year. A good audio book was all it took to help him relax. He loved any and all things Elvis. His biggest love and pride and joy were his two grandchildren, whom he adored and would walk on water for. He will always be remembered for his quick wit, his big smile, and his soft heart. Jimmy was the high school sweetheart and then loving husband for 39 years of Cheryl Gauthier Perez. He was the very proud father of James Anthony, Jr. and Ross James Perez. He was also the best Papa to his precious grandchildren Paisley Rae and Peyton James Perez. Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents Alfred J. Perez and Daisy Ciaccio Perez and brother Tony Taylor (Linda). He is the brother of Janice Morrell (late Edward), Ralph Perez and Marilyn Nunez (Hillary). Linda Ann Ragas passed away on December 29, 2019 surrounded by her family at the age of 68. She was born on January 20, 1951 in New Orleans, LA to the late Fabien and Gertrude Ragas and most recently resided in Hammond, LA. Linda is the loving mother of Bree Ragan (Roy); caring grandmother of Landon, Wyatt, and Hunter; and cherished Aunt to many nieces and nephews. Paul George Schoenberger, Sr. passed away December 28, 2019 at the age of 78. He was born February 25, 1941 in New Orleans, LA; a native of New Orleans, and the last 14 years lived in Covington LA. He recently resided at St. Luke’s Living Center in New Orleans. He retired from The Montelone Hotel in 2005, having worked there for 43 years. Paul was married 58 years to Beverly Schoenberger, whom still resides at St Luke’s Living Center. He is surived by his two children Paul Schoenberger, Jr. and Tracy Andras; three grandchildren Abby Andras, Amber and Victoria Schoenberger. Loving son of George Daniel Schoenberger and Mary Gladys Robertson Schoenberger. Brother of Mary Gladys Schoenberger Holmes. Paul loved his family dearly, as well believed in physical fitness since he was a teenager and was a boxer for a short period locally. He enjoyed the simple things in life which included spending time with his family and simply relaxing. Austin Joseph Sicard, Sr. passed away on December 6, 2019 at the age of 91. Native of New Orleans and resided in Chalmette, LA, from 1952- 2005. He served in the Army during WWII and The Korean War. He was employed at Kaiser Aluminum for over 30 years as an engineer at the power plant. Beloved husband of the late Marilyn LeBlanc Sicard. Father of Austin, Clyde (Linda), and Denise (Glenn) Plaisance. Brother of Yvonne Sicard Erath. Son of the late George R. Sicard and Hilda Duffel Sicard. Eugene David Vaughn
Eugene David Vaughn, U.S. Army veteran and proud graduate of Brother Martin High School, passed away on December 27, 2019, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 40. He was born May 23, 1979, in Chalmette, to David T. Vaughn and Wanda F. Vicari. While in the Army, he was stationed in Germany for three years. After leaving the Army, he moved back to his hometown of Chalmette initially working as a Xerox service agent before joining his father’s computer services business where he spent 15 years working in the computer industry assisting businesses with their IT needs. Eugene was highly thought of and loved by many of their customers and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his grieving wife Christina Thomas Vaughn and son Joshua Eugene Vaughn, and his grieving parents David T. Vaughn (Kim), and Wanda F. Vicari (AJ). He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased in death by his loving sister Elizabeth Mary Vaughn. Eugene enjoyed his time being with family and friends, fishing, and shooting guns. Ronald Edison “Chef” Wilemon passed in the early morning hours of January 1, 2020 at his home in Arabi, LA at the age of 68. Ron was born in Mobile, AL, on March 20, 1951. He’s a graduate of Vigor High School, continuing his education at the University of Kansas. Ron was married to Regina “Gina” Wilemon for 26 years. An Executive Chef and co-proprietor of Allegro Bistro, he retired in January 2019. Ron and Gina starting a new venture as shop keepers at Old Arabi Marketplace, selling antiques and collectibles to enjoy one of their favorite pastimes. Catherine Rizzuto Gay passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, January 10, 2020 at the age of 89. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that she had touched in some way throughout her life. She was the cherished wife of the late Robert Gay. Loving mother of Robbie Maynard (Kevin), Kim Gay Deemer, Robert J. Gay (Narda) and the late Timothy Conners and Zoe Gay. Daughter of the late Henry and Margaret Love Rizzuto. Sister of James Rizzuto (Nancy). She is also survived and fondly remembered by her 8 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Catherine was born on January 15, 1930 in New Orleans, LA and was a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish where she enjoyed a long career with both Flintkote Tile Mill and Cover Girl Lingerie. She was an active member and parishioner of Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church and the V.F.W. Chapter 3706. Catherine found pleasure in the details of everyday life and caring deeply for others. Devin Patrick Hill entered heaven on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at 1:37 a.m. at the age of 36. Devin loved his wife, Tonya M. Hill, and his children, Abram Patrick and August Patrick, unconditionally. His greatest joy was spending time with his boys, whether it was watching them play ball, listening to music, singing, dancing, or teaching them how to build a fire. Devin was proud of the home and the life he built for his family. He was a devoted, generous friend with a tremendous heart who always put others first. Devin never met a stranger and had an uncanny ability to make people laugh. He cherished the simple things in life and walked by his faith daily. His philosophy of life and signature quotes made others feel hope and happiness that gave Devin great jubilation. He was a St. Bernard Parish employee and lifelong resident. Devin was a Graduate of the University of New Orleans School of Engineering, and a proud Chalmette High Alum who was passionate about football. As No. 40, he was a tenacious force on the field and played the game with an internal motor that would not quit. He still holds the all-time career record for the most sacks – a stat he was very proud of. Devin was the loving son of Chris E. Hill and Jack G. Hill, Jr. Beloved brother of Derek J. Hill and Darcy M. Hill (Brittany). Grandson of Patricia G. Hill and the late Jack G. Hill, Sr., Jennielee Allain and the late Van Allain and the late Wilfred J. Eagan. Edward “Eddie” Mark Mixon, Jr. entered his eternal heavenly fisherman’s paradise on October 28, 2019 at the age of 50. Born on August 29, 1969, he was a lifelong resident and commercial fisherman of St Bernard Parish, LA. To know Eddie was to love Eddie. He was definitely a force to be reckoned with, but, at the same time, he had a huge, loving and caring heart. Eddie had compassion without prejudice, and would help anybody, yet demanded his respect. Eddie loved to make people laugh; anybody, everybody, he never met a stranger. The love, happiness and laughter he brought to all of us will last a lifetime. He has met with family and friends who have preceded him to Heaven, his father Edward Mark Mixon Sr, his daughter Heavyn-Leigh Angel Mixon and even his best friend Jay Dardar. Patricia Morel Romaguera passed away peacefully on Friday, January 3, 2020, at the age of 81. She was the cherished wife of 54 years to the late Frank Romaguera. Loving mother of Michael Romaguera (Dawn), Lori Romaguera and Libby Romaguera (the late Christian Gene Alexander). Proud grandmother of Adam, Taylor, Kirsten, Gabriella, Cameron, Jillian and Ingrid. Louis H. Baudin, Jr. passed away on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at the age of 75. He was the beloved husband of Elizabeth Sanchez Baudin. Loving father of Jennifer Baudin Wall (Bryan), Jaclyn Baudin Cordes (Jason), and Jessica Elizabeth Baudin. Grandfather of Peyton Anthony Cordes, Ian Thomas Wall, Olivia Kathryn Cordes, and Mia Elizabeth Wall. Brother of Bonnie Baudin Ferman (Larry). He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Zulma Munch Baudin and the late Louis H. Baudin, Sr. Louis was a lifelong resident of St. Bernard Parish, moving to Slidell, Louisiana, in 2005. For 40 years, he dedicated his professional life to the children of his community, while serving in numerous capacities in the St. Bernard Parish School System, where he retired in 2013 as the Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance. He was a member of the Theta Xi Fraternity, the Krewe of Thoth, the Old Fashion Social and Hunting Club, and the Chalmette High Alumni Association. In his spare time, he loved hunting, fishing, playing golf, cooking, and watching sports with his family and friends. His talents were immeasurable and varied, and he seldom faced a challenge he could not tackle - be it with a hand tool, a fishing pole, or a pen and paper. He was loved and adored by all who knew him, and his memory will live forever in the hearts and minds of those he leaves behind. Sandra Kay Kraus Alfonso passed away surrounded by her son and siblings on Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at the age of 73. She was born in New Orleans, LA, on December 29, 1946, to the late Albert John Kraus, Sr. and Anna Rose Calvert. She was preceded in death by her brother, Albert John “Johnny” Kraus, Jr. and her nephew, Jacob Paul Kraus. She was the loving mother of Raymond Michael Alfonso, Jr. She is survived by her siblings Sr. Barbara Kraus, SSND, Susan McNeil and James “Jimmy” Kraus (Sue). She is also survived and fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews Julie Clement (Jeremy), Alex, Dominick and Robert Clement, Zoya, Sele’, Rami and Maci Kraus, Katherine “Katie” McNeil, Jason McNeil (Nicole), Jaxton “Jax” and Collette “Coco’ McNeil, Christopher McNeil and Andrew “Andy” McNeil and her favorite cousins, Patsy Thibodeaux and Glenn and Cindy Schallenberg. Sandra was an outgoing person who loved people. She started her long work career at Genuine Auto Parts on Shrewsbury Road. She then worked for many years for Schwegmann Bros. Supermarket. She worked in the accounting office on Gentilly Road and made many friends for life. Her next career move was working at Browns Dairy. She loved working there and was always excited to see the Brown’s Cow in different locations throughout the city. Her love of the dairy cow led to her extensive cow collection. She retired from Browns Dairy to undertake her final purpose in life, taking care of her elderly mother, who lived to be 97. She recently joined the St. Bernard Council on Aging, where she spent her days meeting new people and enjoying retirement. On any given day, she could be seen having a great time trying to get that beanbag in any hole that could score her some runs. She was a huge Saints fan and proudly wore her Black & Gold. She will be sadly missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to have known her. William “Billy” Bayle, Jr. passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2020. He was 65 years old. Billy was the loving father of Bonnie and the cherished brother of Darlene. Sandra Oakley Boudousquie, born in New Orleans, passed away on December 17, 2019 at the age of 68. Sandra was the cherished mother of Robert Whitney Oakley, Jr., (Angel) and Karla Oakley-Oleksik (Michael). She is also survived by a loving sister, Gail Rinkle. She adored her four grandchildren, Robert Whitney Oakley III, Aimee Oakley, Spencer Oleksik and Grant Oleksik. She was also blessed with two great grandchildren, Brandon Oakley and Allie Oakley. Sandra worked in New Orleans as a legal secretary for 30 years. She was also married to Robert Whitney Oakley for 30 years. She resided in Chalmette, Louisiana, for much of her life. Sandra is affectionately remembered by her “best”, Juanita Nehlig and a host of extended family and friends. The visitation and services were held on January 17, 2020, at St. Benilde Church, 1901 Division St., Metairie, LA. Following Mass, a gathering took place at the home of Gail Rinkle, 4817 Burke Dr., Metairie, LA.
Edward Michael Grotkowski
Edward Michael Grotkowski passed away on January 18, 2020 in Gulfport, MS, at the age of 65. He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward J. and Dot Nickerson Grotkowski; and niece, Tara Rose Grotkowski. He is survived by his brother Jim Grotkowski (Doreen) of Diamondhead; special friend Carolyn Jasper of Diamondhead; two nephews, Jimmy and Hugh; and one niece, Gina. Mr. Grotkowski was 13th generation of the Nickersons who founded the city of Chatham, MA on Cape Cod. He was also direct descendant of members of the Mayflower. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, Ed’s career spanned a vast array of experiences in various regions of the country. He held a Bachelor of Arts degree in Applied Music, Music Education, and French from Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pennsylvania, a Master of Arts degree in French from Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, and a Master of Music degree from the University of Miami in South Florida. Additional graduate work in music was completed at Vander Cook College of Music in Chicago, Illinois and at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. In recent years, he had been a student at the Graduate School of Theology at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. He had taught in public and private schools for over three decades. His bands, choirs and orchestras have performed in venues ranging from Universal Studios in California and Florida, and the state championship football game televised throughout the state of Pennsylvania, to leading the Disney Parade in Florida and California, to televised Christmas specials broadcast throughout the Great Lakes region and Canada, to the Ray Martin Christmas Parade and band competition in Greenwood, Mississippi. In recent years, his ensembles had accumulated numerous First Place, Grand Champion, and Superior ratings. He has held conducting positions with the Erie Philharmonic Youth Orchestra in Pennsylvania as well with the Greater Miami Youth Symphony in South Florida. In addition to his teaching positions, he had concurrently held Director of Music positions in churches throughout the country and has been a presenter for the World Library of Sacred Music in Southern California and liturgical conventions for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on several occasions. In 2007, it was his privilege to be invited to conduct the Louisiana State University Band in a special conductor’s symposium. Mr. Grotkowski oversaw the construction, rebuilding, and enlargement of several pipe organs while maintaining an active performance career. He has performed organ recitals in Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, Florida, California, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Mississippi. For a total of 20 years he was Director of Music at Our Lady of the Gulf Church in Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi where he has conducted major works for choir and orchestra such as: Gloria by Vivaldi, Christmas Oratorio by Saint-Saëns, and Requiem by Fauré among others. In 2005, in celebration of the installation of the new pipe organ, Ed presented a series of recitals and concerts which included appearances by Dame Gillian Weir of London, England and Dr. Herndon Spillman of Louisiana State University. In 2005, he also hosted Dr. Stanley Michelski, Past President of the American Band Masters Association as a clinician for the East Jefferson High School Band. Ed led the East Jefferson Band in a tour of Southern California in May of 2006 and did the same in 2010. The band was selected from a field of national contenders to perform two concerts in Orlando at the National School Board Association Convention for an audience of 15,000 which included virtually every superintendent and board member in the United States. From 2006 until October of 2013, he directed the music for the evening mass at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Biloxi, Mississippi. Mr. Grotkowski taught for the last twenty one years at East Jefferson High School in Metairie, Louisiana, where he conducted the E. J. Marching and Concert Bands, Jazz Ensembles, Fine Arts Chorus and String Orchestra. He enjoyed teaching French I, II, and III. For seven years, Ed taught courses in Music, Music Education, and French as an adjunct professor at Nunez Community College in Chalmette, Louisiana. In December of 2013, Ed led the East Jefferson High School Marching Band in the half-time show at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association State Championship Football game in the Superdome. On December 26, 2013, Ed led the choir of Our Lady of the Gulf Church of Bay St. Louis, Mississippi on a concert tour to Rome, Italy where he conducted and accompanied the choir for three performances. The first was at the Freizenkerk Church within the walls of Vatican City where the group provided all of the music for Sunday morning Mass in Latin, Dutch, and English. He performed on an organ built in the early 18th century. Later that night, he directed the choir in a performance of American holiday music and selections from the sacred repertoire at Al Casa Letto. Later that week, he and the choir were the featured musicians at the 5 pm Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. Ed performed on the great Vatican organ and conducted the choir in a performance including music of Vivaldi, Arcadelt, and Mozart, and including Gregorian chant. Ed held membership in the National Pastoral Musicians Association and attended conventions in Louisville, Pittsburgh, and Washington, D.C. where he completed course work at the Gregorian Chant Institute taught by Father Anthony Ruff. He also held membership in Music Educators National Conference and associated affiliations as well as in numerous professional associations. Family and friends attended a visitation at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 9113 Kiln DeLisle Rd., Pass Christian, MS, on Tuesday, January 21, 2020. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Pass Christian, MS. Interment: St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Hyannis, Massachusetts. Ollie Foxworth Hunter
Ollie Foxworth Hunter passed away on Monday, January 13, 2020, at her home in Chalmette, LA, at the age of 89. Born in Tylertown, MS, to the late Johnnie and Eloise Foxworth, Ollie was married to the late Rev. Junior Hunter of New Orleans, LA. Mother Hunter, as she was affectionately known to members of First Zion Baptist Church, had a passion for traveling, gardening, dining out and helping others. She leaves to cherish her memory, her children: Dorothy Vinnett Daniels (late Stanley, Rainey), Charles Brown Jr. (Claire), and Kimberly Peters (Trevor); adopted children: Joshua, Calvin and Kristenlyn Avery; siblings: Tommie Stokes (William), Johnnie Posey, Ethel Foxworth, and Eugene Foxworth; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Ollie is preceded in death by her son, Frank Brown; and sisters: Audrey Johnson and Helen Speight. Family and friends attended the visitation and funeral services honoring her life will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2020, at First Zion Baptist Church, 7201 Olive St., New Orleans, LA.
